They are not a metal band but an idol group so they are more about stage performance than music. In the Japanese media the are usually referred as a "metal dancing unit".
They came from Sakura Gakuin which is an idol group whose members are between the age of 10-15 and carefully selected by an agency. Of course musical talent is not the most important criteria. When they became too old for the Sakuta Gakuin they (I suppose their agents) were smart enough to differentiate themselves from the millions of other pop idol groups by mixing metal and kawaii. They took a risk and got lucky.
Of course they grab every oportunity to tell that they are not an idol group nor a metal band but the one and only Babymetal! It is just branding.
I can imagine the atonal sound etc. is on purpose too.
It is my personal opinion but I think most of their fans in Japan are baby(metal) panty sniffing males in their 50's, who like to fap to groups of young girls, but slightly prefer metal to pop music.

    LMAO, you guyz :'D

Thank you all a lot about the suggestions. Emotiva DC-1 is a good idea. But come on, fulla 2? That would be a downgrade, not very thrilling.

Sir @Psalmanazar, I value your opinion, you bring up valid points, but I disagree about wyrd - it does make a noticeable difference with my modi 1. Without wyrd everything gets more congested, with more digital and glarey treble and weaker bass. I guess it's because modi 1 is usb powered and benefits from the nice linear power supply in wyrd.

Anyways. Yeah, I know most anime has very compressed audio (and other problems). But come on, try this one and tell me, are the violin and piano not well recored: (skip to 1:19)

Yeah, I know this particular anime is a bit gay and emo, but at the same time it's very emotional and moves me in a special way. And I like the audio.

Regarding your other comments about anime: whatever floats your boat, man. I quite enjoy "43 year olds" (more like 30) pretending to be ADHD school girls. And no, I don't watch much action anime, I prefer school romantic comedies and dramas... And no, that's technically not hentai, it's ecchi: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Ecchi
Hentai would be full on pornography.
Anyways, anime is art. It's normal that some people hate it (or specific examples of it). But it's a big-ish industry and a huge piece of human culture and it's here to stay :p

Back to audio. I guess I'll try to stick with modi 1 for longer. But I can't resist getting a Jotunheim, I want to hear it for myself. I remember Marvey saying somewhere that 98% or something of HD650 owners at headfi have not truly (properly) heard said headphone, since their amps suck. Apart from that he and many others say Jot+650 is an amazing pairing. Marvey also said magni is boring compared to Jotunheim. What do you guys think? Sure, I don't need Jotunheim's full resolution, but I bet I would appreciate the macrodynamics and clarity, no?

Again, thanks for the advice, its good to hear that dacs aren't too important (in my case at least).

    Love you all!

We will not validate your poor life choices to listen to MP3s of compressed, clipped recordings on a forward, glarey amp.

@Renekton , per @Psalmanazar's observations, have you considered the Lyr 2. It has power and slam.

    EDIT: epiphany

You were that dude with that insane wall of text intro. f**k.

I rage quit that anime after the disgusting pop remix of Chopin etude op 25 no 5.

Also can't stand how much the performers sniff in the duet recordings.

Wait, how does Jot glare compare to magni "steel"? I've only read about these. Ask a fish what is water... Ask me what is magni steel, I just don't know. Haven't tried enough gear.

Lyr 2, great idea, thanks! Judging by the schiit amp compendium heptagon, Lyr 2 does appear to match my preferences. But I was left with the impression that Jot just has some magical synergy with HD650? I'll give it some research.

@SSL, I don't really know my classical, so I'm not sure what you mean. Do you by chance happen to remember in which episode this was? I don't remember anything which I would label as a "pop remix" of classical in the anime. My bad. I tried searching in youtube the name of the anime + "Chopin etude op 25 no 5", but all I got was normal sounding piano. Meh, anyways. Btw I take the sniffing as a bonus (detail) :D

Ep 10? Not so much a remix but an embellishment with shitty reverb and percussion samples. I guess the unsullied music wasn't beautiful or emotional enough to serve the fake drama.

If you expect magic from the Jotunheim/HD650 you will be deeply disappointed.
It can sound good, excellent or like schiit depending on your source. In your case most likely it would be the latter.

    not satisfied, yes
anyway, O2+DAC does a good job with my headphones (HD650, AQ Nigthhawk, Fostex TH-X00) but the sound lacks flesh and engagement
on the other hand I found Centrance DACport too soft and bloomy, especially with AQ
    thanks!

This is still very compressed and sounds bad compared to well recorded music.
But to be a little bit more constructive I’ve just listened to this video and some other anime tracks with Jot/HD650 and Vali2/HD650 for you.
I only have the Cowboy Bebop OST and its in flac (still sounds very compressed but borderline listenable) so I looked up some anime songs on spotify and used usb, I think you would use it that way.
Unfortunately I’ve never heard the Magni, so I can’t give you any comparison.

The Jot sounds forward, if you like this forwardness, you might like the Jot. (I like it with most female vocals.) Listening to the video you’ve posted its like sitting in the first row, the violin sounds very forward and loud. With the Vali2 it is like sitting where the young guy is, in the back. With most of the other songs I preferred the Vali2, the Jot was just too ear piercing.

Most of these anime songs doesn’t have wide soundstage so at least the Jot’s narrow soundstage doesn’t really hurts that.

I do think that the Jot would be an overkill for you as this kind of music is compressed and not well recorded, no amp will change that or give you microdetails.

It seems you’ve already decided that you will buy it, just don’t expect a big improvement over what you have now.

Spare your wallet, the Fulla 2 is very good for the money. Almost too good if you ask me.

Add a Koss PortaPro or a Veclan Monk Plus and you are done for a long time. Price tags are not an indication of performance by definition in audio.

    Edit:

@Renekton look up the prices! Value for money is rarely this good.

    Last post for now:

So I was checking the prices for the K181DJ, my portable headphone. In the EU they can be found for 55 Euros. That is 55 Euros for a full-size, isolating (clampy I know) headphone with bass boost (that actually works) and a detachable cable.

I just bought a second one. 55 Euros for so much plus the AKG folding system, okay.

Highly recommended if you are looking for a PortaPro that can actually survive heavy duty back pack abuse and slinging around.

@Renekton - Don't do it. I had the Jot and couldn't stand it after a month or so with some of the music that I listen to. The Modi 1 is probably more forgiving than the Yggdrasil, however you're using a hd600 rather than a hd650 (based on my interpretation of your post). I don't think it would be a good choice despite what you mentioned as your sonic priorities. The Lyr 2 might be worth a try, and there is one FS by @Torq for a great price. You can always roll tubes to dial in your sound as well. Personally I would go Vali 2 or Valhalla 2 but they may not have the slam that you are looking for.

@SSL - Agreed. The show had a lot of potential but it was ruined by the melodrama.

@Wilson - LOL I didn't realize that until I read your edited post.

yeah, Chopin doesn't know what he is doing, we need some random Japanese tv producer to fix his works.

That is one heavily compressed Kreutzer

Even the 2nd video suggested has better recording.

I mean, liking it is one thing, calling it well recorded is another. I like McDonalds, but I'm not calling it fine dining.

My first combo was O2+HD600. It was doing a great job until I heard my headphones on friend's bottlehead crack. You mentioned 400-500$ right? Valhalla 2 or Crack would definitely be a step up in my opinion. Having a budget to start with is great! You can use this thread to figure out how much you want to allocate to each. http://superbestaudiofriends.org/in...dget-among-headphones-amps-and-dac-source.57/

I have not tried AQ or Fostex, so can't comment on pairing. The OTL amp advice was mainly for HD 650.

EDIT: Didn't realize the question was for DACs. I thought you were trying to find a good amp. Sorry if this didn't help!
