@Lasollor, if you haven't done so, you may want to read The Gay Science or Beyond Good and Evil before This Spake Zarathustra so as to get a good sense of his core positions like eternal recurrence, anti-dualism, etc.

Thanks! I'm familiar with the content of those books, but haven't actually read them. I'll add them to my list.

Most accessible, most poignant, most insightful Nietszche is Ecce Homo. As the man himself said, any philosophy is a confession of its author. And here he gives it all, including his daily diet, walking habits...., right before being hit by the crazies in Torino. Utterly sad and beautiful at the same time.

    "Normal" by Warren Ellis.

As ever with him, it's somewhat fucked-up and disturbing, but in an interesting rather than gratuitous way. Less macroherpetophile bukkake (sp?) this time.

Great site if you are feeling stalled out intellectually. High-caliber thinking about science, culture and technology made accessible. Eno was interviewed here a couple of times.

A regular read of mine (ie about once a year or so) is Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita. Wonderful book.

All my permanently-bed-side books were lost in the December-2015 Chennai flood. I replaced this one with a different translation, which turned out to be a slight mistake. I immediately ordered the one I had before. Thus, I have just read it through twice.

Apart from that one, never read the Russian classics. Just now, staying Russian with Dostoyevsky's The Idiot.

Getting to the end of The Brothers Karamazov, and it's one of the best novels I have ever read. The Idiot is next.
Sorry for your loss, having lost many books myself, I know the feeling and it sucks.

Thank your for your condolences. Yes, it does feel a but like being bereaved.

One of the worst things about being flooded. I lost books that I have had since teens. Most of those bed-side volumes have been replaced, courtesy of Amazon etc, but other stuff was irreplaceable. Waist-deep water sucks! But it could have been a lot worse.

Just finished reading this book. More amusing, insightful and inspiring than expected. You really can make your hobby your job...

Great Sci-Fi. If you like things like Ender's Game or Dune you'll like this.

Started on the Great Game trilogy by Dave Duncan (still on the first novel, Past Imperative). Introduced to the author through another series, Demon Knight, became an instant fan. Interesting concepts, and his characters are likeable where applicable.

I am so, so sorry to hear that. I can't imagine how bad that must be. Lost a few books myself during a typhoon here in the Philippines some years back. No shortage of those during the rainy season, but this was a particularly bad one that displaced us for a few months. I do hope none of the ones lost were gifts or anything of the sort.

Master and Margarita is on my to read list.

Recently finished Slade House by David Mitchell. Ghosts, haunted house, missing people,... and the characterization is spot on.

I generally don't read work related literature in my spare time, but I feel like I want to develop my skills further, but don't have the time at work to do this kind of reading. My question is if other folks here struggle with the same problem. Framed another way, what are the implications for work/life balance when you consider what you do for a living to be your calling?
