Cheapy to get started. When I am settled with it, I'll look around for something. The thread has some interesting cases in it. Having it in hand will give me a better idea what to look for. digi+pro is here, this hat will be here next week sometime....

I did things in stages as I got my feet wet with the Pi and wouldn't do things exactly the same way but I bought this for power (except with a black faceplate).

It's basically a Chinese knock-off of the AMB S11 with an R core transformer, you tell them the specifics of what you need wrt power and whatever when you order and they build it for you. I'll be excising the guts to put into a case with the Pi this weekend-ish.

Wrt cases there aren't any that specifically fit the Pi + 502 so I just got a cheap acrylic one and removed the top when the hat came. If you want something more permanent then one like this with just a top and bottom would be better.

When it comes I can whip up a .STL case with cutouts so you can get it printed (by a friend, nearby uni, shape ways etc). My standard Pi case is not going to fit it too.

Yes. You will only get two mounting holes, but that may be enough.

    Cheers,
    Michael

I have posted some new docs on the web site at:

    http://www.pi2design.com/store/p15/502DAC1_-_Pro_Audio_Shield.html

The HW reference manual and data sheet are up, as well as a 3D step model of the board for you case builders.

As always, all feedback is welcome!

As for stock status, we were only able to ship 12 units due to a shortage of the 1/4" to XLR male adapters. More are arriving next Tuesday or Wednesday latest. We will resume shipping then. I know some of you may not care, but we need to ship our complete setup for production units.

    Cheers,
    Michael

@Michael Kelly I think there's a typo on the board image on HW_Ref page 14.
In the text you talk about the J3 connector but on the picture it's marked as J5?

Also, would be great to have a word about the available headers – if you think they might be of some use to people (for case installation and whatnot).

Hi, I got my board today seems to be fine playing 44.1/16 files but I cannot make it work with 96/192 files I'm using volumio with dac+ pro controllers, I also tested moode with same results.

When you select the 192Khz file does the yellow light go on? Also what output are you using?

    Cheers,
    Michael

I found runeaudio had a default setting when streaming IIRC. It was sending music to the pi at 320 kb, probably transcoding to mp3. I head to change that in the runeaudio software to get the full bitrate. So... volumio software maybe?

Just to let you know guys I'm using an bcn to coax adapter because my dac has no bnc input, I tried the optical output from the board and it's working correctly that way connected to my dac (nuprime ida-8 which is an amp/dac combo).

And you removed the jumper on the 502dac to set the correct voltage for the coax spdif?

    Got mine today. Woohoo!

Psst @Michael Kelly - the middle USB header on my RPi board came a little cockeyed, causing it to short out one of the pins on the BNC connector with the stock height headers. I clipped them off flush and it's all good now. Here's a pic.

I ended up getting my case after the weekend (thanks prime!) so didn't have as much free time to work on it but it's finally mostly together now.

The case bottom has an indentation for fitting an ssd or something which is maybe good if you're using the intended logic board and building an htpc but in my case just made things a little more "interesting" and of course there were lots of little things like that which was both fun and aggravating. On the plus side it looks like evil alien technology. I have the Pi still in the iPod box because of the high-pitched noise, and it's on top because there's plenty of room for the Pi inside but not so much the Pi inside the box. The power cable is just half the one from the Chinese lps, I'll do something less hacky later and obviously it won't need to be so long. The little Samsung ssd is disconnected for a bit in case things go disastrously bad during the initial test run, so I'm just listening to one of the Moode radio presets.

Wouldn't the high pitched whine be muffled by the case?

You'd think but not so much in practice. There are a few things going on. First the cardboard box doesn't reflect sound like anodized aluminum does and there's foam on the top where I poked all the holes whereas the metal case vents are just holes. Second the iPod box is pretty snug which keeps the Pi warm and I'd previously found that also mitigated the sound, the Pi in the case doesn't get that warm. And I guess compounding those things is there's no real back on the case at the moment as it's meant for a mini-itx board with its relatively big (in terms of Pi hats) i/o shield. Obviously if I had to I could take steps to address it, and some of that I'll do anyway like a cover for the rear opening, but Michael seems to have fixed the problem on production boards.

Okay, received the board tuesday I think, waited til yesterday for a cheapo BNC->RCA cable to arrive, so the 502 have run only a bit more than 18 hours now.
The Pi and 502 are powered by the same 15$ LT3042 circuit I presented a couple days ago, I run PiCorePlayer then LMS on my computer (no NAS as of yet), Ethernet is used to link the two units.
The 502 SPDIF out via BNC goes to a Bifrost Multibit, a Saga, then a Topping TP60 amp outputting to a pair of Klipsch RP250.

At first I didn't feel much difference with the Digi+Pro (Pi & Digi powered by the LT3042), when I came back to it later in the evening, it seemed to me that separation was improved (backvocals in the middle of 'Keep your eyes peeled' by Quens of the Stone Age (album version of this track is nowhere to be found on youtube... wtf?!) but also the sense of space and room reverberation (The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz version of 'Patra' from Saint Vitus (whole thing)) also now really have the impression that the vocals of 'God' by Ufomammut have been recorded at the entrance of a large grotto on the left :)
On Lucretia Dalt 'Esplendor' I used to be able to pinpoint the position from where originated each bass note (sadly can't make you listen to this... buy the album!), it's a bit more blurry now... not sure why given the remarked performance so far...
Can't find a good sounding battery anywhere on youtube, so here's one not too shabby

Getting frustrated nothing from youtube sounds correct... must be there's a link with this setup being a bit unforgiving?
Don't know if most of you suscribe to redbook rez online music service, I don't... If you do, have a listen to Bar Kokhba's 'Lucifer (Book of Angels Vol.10)', very nice recording of fresh music!
One last one, which cleanliness really shines with the 502 : 'French Kissing' by Jean Louis Murat and Jennifer Charles

Well, took me far too long to write that, but only because it's a real pleasure to listen through this combination of gear. Now waiting for Vidar to be available... (and then I'll change my speakers! ;) )
(or maybe I'll hack the Bifrost Multibit and feed it with i2s first?)
