Nice JBLs. I saw a pair of Acoustic Research AR3a at a yard sale the other day for $75. Probably should have just snagged them, but alas I have a lot of spring cleaning to do...

Wow, so basically a subwoofer line array...

Wonder how hard it is to get them all lined up in terms of phasing? Could imagine that different room configurations and alignment of the array could result in some crazy constructive/destructive interference if not adjusted carefully. But then again, I'm not sure someone with this much focus on bass is looking for fine details! Cheers

It would actually be (relatively) simpler since you'll calculate as a cylindrical wavefront rather than spherical. So basically you'll be concerned with constructive/destructive interference along the longitudinal axis rather than the ridiculous crisscross of a normal setup.

It might be a modular isobaric design... or just to stagger forces so the whole things doesn't shake itself and move across the stage... or simply spacing issues (bottom pic, the motor assemblies would hit each other if the drivers were all facing forward)... etc

I think one of the points of having the back of the drivers (magnet to magnet) against each other is so that the forces cancel out, but staggering it in such a manner causes complex interactions of forces.

Actually, these towers are back and forth H-frame (also as @Grahad2 pointed out, forces cancel) dipoles, even less room problems than cilindrical. Being line-array, floor to ceiling wave-front will be more even, which is added plus. And in the center both sides of the 'center channel' are linea- array ribbons. 2-way system, essentially.
    Edit:
Since these are dipoles the builder felt that 20Hz at 120 dB distortion was too high originally, he aimed below 1%.
This must sound unreal. The amps he uses are NC400 Hypex which for woofer duty are simply superb.

Got to listen to a pair of Maggie 3.7s powered by Rouge Audio M180 Monoblocks! Nothing too special or crazy, but a first for me
