Unfortunately, that is all I know. My rep mentioned the release of the HDV820 in Tokyo and that there was a closed back variant of the HD800 coming but that is all the info I received for now. He did say more info coming at a later date but if history is any indicator, it will be a bit of a surprise arrival for us. We'll see, maybe they're changing their game in response to the market.

They needed to update the HD650 five or six years ago. Do none of these companies care about the sub $1k market anymore?

Not when you can get people to fork over $5000 for headphones. :(

I'm half scared that they would mess it up.

There are enough units in the wild to stock the second hand market for years.

I doubt that I will need another HD650 (other than the ear/head pads). I'd still be sad.

I talked with Sennheiser on the phone last week and I also asked about the HD 820. The reply was "the HD 820 is not an official product and you will not hear any mention of this name."

Could be working title, a prototype without production plans or just a model that is not meant to be released anytime soon.

The Voldemort of headphones. It's 6khz peak and cavernous reverberations is enough to strike fear in the hearts of men.

Sounds like an HF admin talking about SBAF after deleting a post mentioning here...

Maybe the HD820 naming was trashed? They did the same thing with Orpheus sucessor. The naming was first HE-1060 and later changed to HE-1

Not surprising Sennheiser would not comment on the HD 820 before the official launch. Some may recall that Sennheiser GbmH and Sennheiser USA were completely unaware that Axel Grell showed the black HDVD 800 prototype at the Tokyo Headphone Festival in 2015 and their representatives initially denied its existence.

Unfortunately couldn't attend Munich Hi-End this year :(

Somebody go and bully Axel Grell until he tells what he know about this, and post it here...
lol, joke. But one would assume that since we haven't heard anything yet about this. They apparently won't show anything at all in Munich.

so given the cashback amount the HD820 closed back most likely will not exceed the MSRP of the HD 800S. Just taking this out of my ass.

Might be a typo though, looking at their other page about the cashback campaign: http://www.sennheiser.co.jp/campaign/2017/
The "Headphone Amp HDVD 820" is listed rather than "Headphone HD 820".
