For some of us, there is just something indefinable about the Dead.Like... almost always their music makes me smile. It just does. And I'm not even a deadhead. I'd go so far as to say that they are probably, all in all, my favourite band, but there's a long way from that to being a deadhead. Could I have imagined that I would still want to listen to listen to their music forty-five years later? Probably not.

Even in 1990[ish], I was on my way to one of the two or three times I saw them, thinking, "I hate crowds: I hate loud music. Why am I going to a rock concert?" It was wonderful. And the sound was fantastic: the only time my ears hurt was when the crowd joined in.

One thing that really struck me then was how un-rock-star they were: they just walked on stage and played music together. Like they had just thought, guys, lets have a jam. Like they had just thought: oh look, several tons of equipment, let's use it! :)

I don't use any streaming service. Mostly I go out for my music, these days, and see it live. If I'm at home and there's something I fancy that I haven't got, youtube usually has, and, audio-wise, it is usually good enough for me. I can listen to Harry Belafonte like I haven;t been able to do since I wore out the 78. I can even find stuff that dates back much further. Hmmm... I should probably have another nostalgia browse soon :)

By the way. A nice window on all the archive.org Dead stuff, with a nice, simple, clear interface, is Relisten. Other bands too.

It's hard for me to totally get how you could totally get the dead without seeing them. Something I did way, way past a hundred shows. But OTOH you don't have to totally get them to get it, because it is you as well as anyone else... As said in a slightly different way in this trailer for the upcoming documentary...

Thanks for the link! I have been aware of the culture of swapping (actually sanctioned) soundboard recordings and so forth, and have been aware of the deadheads online (I remember them being at it in pre-web days, in Gopherspace and the like). I shall try to make time to have a listen, by some means or other.

The Tidal sub is possibly overpriced- but my rationale is that it lets me save money, being able to audition decent versions of albums, before deciding if I want my own forever copy for realsies. I'm not sure if the rationale holds water- but at least it results in hearing lots more music, often losslessly via my nice little RPi endpoint. Spotify is a bit of a crapshoot from open source contrivances right now due to poor API stewardship on Spotifty's part.

Anyway, I'll digress. I generally try to adhere to the famous maxim "I'll try anything once, except Morris Dancing and incest", so look forward to having a listen.

Well, I suppose I understand about Morris Dancing o_O

About the taped music: the Dead were just ahead of their time in understanding that giving the live stuff away enhanced sales of the recordings.

I wish I'd had the opportunity. For some reason, London/England didn't seem to be on their list very often.

Without having seen them more than a couple of times, I can some-how say that your post seems to just... totally get it!

You can stream soundboard recordings and download audience recordings (it's all sanctioned) here:
    https://archive.org/search.php?query=grateful+dead&and[]=mediatype:"etree"

The Grateful Dead used to allow downloading of soundboard recordings on archive.org but they changed that policy years ago.

Relisten is just an easier-for-some front end to archive.org. Different roads to the same music.

Very excited to see this! Can you tell me how to download a show? I'm on a Kindle Fire...perhaps the site loads differently?

I have been downloading some shows today on Windows 10. In my case, I click on the show link and then by where it says "Show All" it will say something like 174 files. I click on that and it comes up with the box to choose the directory where I want the download directed. They then download in zipped form. After I download and unzip, I delete the files that I don't want (example: ogg, mp3). The reason I download all files like this is I want the documentation files.

If you just want the song files, you can choose the format of your choice (example: FLAC) and it will just download those.

Note: This will only work with Audience recordings. Soundboard recordings are streaming only.

I hope this works out for you, Wilson. (I am not familiar with Kindle Fire.)

You can download soundboards and some audience stuff here:

    http://bt.etree.org/?searchzz=&cat=8

The Grateful Dead chose not to shut this down, so it has tacit approval. There was a major difference of opinions amongst the band after they shut soundboard downloads on archive.org. Phil Lesh in particular was so unhappy about it he posted something on his web page about how stupid a decision it was. They don't host copyrighted content on bt.etree.org. I highly recommend the recently posted Boston 91 shows. Bruce Hornsby was on keys and Jerry was on fire. A later set of shows that stand as tall as any post '74. I went to four of the six. We couldn't believe our ears.

In particular check out the last night, you can also find it on Archive.org 9/26/91 The 2nd set will melt your ears right off your head!

I understand where you are coming from, but I got into live music in the mid-90's shortly after Jerry died. As a fan of live improvised music, it is all about experiencing that bit of magic when the band is on fire and transports the listener to another place both musically and mentally. This is a common thread among fans of the Grateful Dead and all improvisational music fans. One can still experience and appreciate this magic via recordings.

From the recent Bob Weir/Phil Lesh mini tour. With Trey Anatasio on guitar and Wally Ingram hitting the skins. Eyes of the World...

The earworm is playing already. I'll save the actual video for the night.

Would anyone be willing to put together a "beginners guide" to the dead for the uninitiated? The dead are one my list of bands I've never gotten into, but I think I should understand. Where do I start?

Can second this show. I did not have much exposure to the Dead and bought the three disc set of this show and it was mind blowing. Music is fantastic. Lots of variety. The recording is really great too.

    CD cover looks like this:

Reckoning is also a pretty good live album.
