I am downgrading from A7RII to D700. The Sony is a formidable tool but there is no joy in shooting it. Looking back, my favourite camera that I have owned (apart from Ricoh GR) was my D90. I frequently used (but could never afford) D700 back in the day. I'm hoping to reignite good feels about photography.

    Bring on that OVF.

That's basically the same logic I had going to the 1ds3 from my Sonys. Ricoh GR still remains my favorite camera of all time, closely followed by the Pentax K-5.

Just as an aside, 1Ds3 is my favorite Canon camera body as well.

If only I wasn't so curious about Canon's rangefinder lenses and didn't go Leica just to try them out, I'd probably still be happy with 1Ds3 + 24-70/2.8 + 70-200/2.8 (basically the full range).

Funny enough, people look at my Leica body and they don't really see the fact that I actually use primarily Nikon and Canon rangefinder lenses on them (so you can guess I'm a Canikon fanboi). The lens determines more of the image quality than some may realize.

I found a second hand D700 on ebay. After taking my first shot to look for sensor dust, EXIF shows 210 shutter actuations o_O

Congrats! Sounds like you found a fantastic deal! What sort of glass are you going to be using with it?

I have a blank slate as I sold all my glass when I moved over to Sony. I used to be 100% Nikkor but the new Tamron primes look interesting...

DAMN. I forgot how perfect the D700 feels in hand.

I am considering a compact pro-sumer camera. Something easy to carry that fits in my pocket.

What do you think of something like the Canon S100? I know it is a bit old now but that series of cameras is close to perfect.

It's definitely dated, but it was a about as good a point and shoot as you could get during it's prime.

My dad's S95 had frequent lens error issue (about once a year or so), not sure if it's fixed in the S100. He moved on to a RX100 mk3 and never looked back.

The perils of buying a nine year old digital camera! The AF is only engaging in single-point mode. I gave Nikon a call and it could be as simple as dust in/around the AF module or an AF module failure, for which they no longer have replacement parts. I'm sending this one back to the seller.

Damn, having proper camera ergonomics and OVF was so good while it lasted though! Off to take a look at Nikons current offerings...

I just snagged a 5D Mark II body off of eBay for $700. Finally getting into full frame now that it's so affordable. The 7D has served me well over the years, but now I'm ready for some of that sweet, sweet bokeh.

I just want a stills camera. Video does not interest me. Compact, and manual focus with a decent sensor are enough. The RX100 is definitely interesting...

The articulated pop up flash of the RX100 is fairly convenient since you can bounce it by adjusting it manually. Given your stills only requirement even the older models which are sold cheaper will be just as good in most cases as the new one.

My first camera was the S90 and I have since gone through the RX100 I, II, and IV. All were near the top of the pile for compact enthusiast cameras during their time and you could do much worse.

How about those mirrorless Fuji X series? They're compact with built in option for split image for manual focusing. Don't own one but got some experience with rented X-T1 for some outdoor travel sessions. It made me fall in love again with manual focusing for sure, and a much lighter burden for my shoulder and back.

I find focus peaking to be more precise than digital split screen. As for manual focussing on Fuji - most of the lenses have fly-by-wire focus rings, which might feel awkward.

Other than that - Fuji is pretty stellar in terms of the overall shooting experience.

When I'm in the market I tend to look for a generation behind the most current bodies... Say a D800 instead of the D810. With a little shopping you can typically find some deals from those folks who MUST have the latest and greatest.

Good luck. Sorry to hear about the 700... typically even at this age they are super reliable.

I am noticing that Nikon is shortening the time that they retain repair parts, even for lenses. Not a great trend! But with shrinking sales I'm not surprised.

I wouldn't exactly consider the fuji x series pocketable, but they're pretty compact and they perform quite nicely. The original x100 can be had for really cheap if you don't mind it's technological niggles. I did enjoy shooting with my buddy's RX100 and I briefly used a few RX10 mk2 as B-cams on a video shoot, I felt the Sonys were very capable cameras and bring a bunch of nice features and great image quality to the table but, much like their ILC counterparts, they're not really cameras you fall in love with and their handling can be a tad fiddly. In terms of a pocketable camera, if it was my own money on the line, I'd either go for a Ricoh GR (easily fits in my jeans pocket, super responsive, incredible image quality) or whatever RX100 iteration that fits in my budget.

@jowls shame about the d700, hopefully you can find something else. If you don't mind taking a gamble again with ancient camera tech, a D3 can be had for similar money and it should also be built a bit more sturdily than the d700. There's that extra bit of bulk you'll have to deal with, but it's effectively a d700 with a battery grip in terms of specs and general handling from what I remember.
