The next one is almost nine months away, but there's a yearly home brew competition in the Dallas/Fort Worth area that has had some excellent entries in the past. I haven't made it there for a few years in a row, but I had a few friends that used to compete (and occasionally win a category or two). They've got a homebrew area and also an area with smaller breweries that's open to the general admission crowd while the home brews are closed off for judging.

I'll try to remember to post something about it again a month or two before it happens next March. It might present a nice opportunity to get a small meet together in Dallas over that weekend.

I'll kindly disagree with you. Bottles only make beer better if you store it long times, and WTF are you thinking storing your beer a long time!?!?!?!?!

I'd like to take a moment of concession to mention they do sell growlers at the stores too, I'm just too much of a puss these days to drink an entire one in a sitting...

In all seriousness, I don't drink beer from the can or bottle. All beer must be poured into a glass for me. I do not freeze my glasses either. All are room temp.

Cans are easier to store and it's getting harder and harder to find the same brands in bottles, unless they are bottled aged brews.

I think jexby was talking about drinking directly from a can - not the source of bottle vs. can. Heady Toppy is recommended from the brewers to be drank directly from the can though.

I think having beers in cans allows less light to come in which are beneficial for most beers. Personally I don't drink any beers directly from their containers unless I'm at the beach but I don't even go that often. The reasoning behind this is because your olfactory senses is in conjunction with your sense of taste. As for aging, I do have some beers that are aging which I got from Europe (all Belgian sour beers) and I plan to keep them cellaring for 5-10 years+. Certain styles like IPAs, you'd want to drink fresh since the hops do lose their flavor over time.

In a nutshell, I think some beers are better on tap, on cans, in bottles or whatever. It's mostly dependent on storage and style.

But yeah, I want to drink a lot more to get a better grasp on beers but I do want to prioritize weight loss first so it's hard. Not gonna lie, I've thought about selling most of my gear to go to Belgium and buy more beers... LOL.

Agreed on the olfactory playing a huge role in taste. Plus cans do impart a nasty metallic taste of their own, when you drink straight from them. I don't go to the beach often, but when I do I'm not going bring a quality beer, since only cans are allowed.

I hope you didn't skip out on the CCB stuff because they're cans. Jai Alai is my jam.

nope. i was talking about buying cans of beer. I don't. last time maybe was 4 years ago? Guinness.
otherwise my taste buds require top fermented belgians bought in bottle, poured into a glass.
or a growler stop at a select few of the multimillion over-hopped breweries in Boulder County.
    excess of riches.

Please, anyone, recommend a good barleywine. Tried, but didn't appreciate: Bigfoot, Olde School and Old Foghorn.
Maybe I am just not a fan of the style.

If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to see your list of favorite Belgians. That's what I love to drink and am always looking for new ones to try.

for now will put in the elites in no particular order (except #1) and hopefully can be found in stores near you.
the complete list would be very long as I find almost every belgian brewed quad/trippel/dubbel to usually be very good.
hint: start with the official Trappist labeled breweries (excluding the new amerikan one) likely can't go wrong:

Westvleteren 12 (not sold outside of Belg, but un Fin real once you find one.)
    Rochefort 10 and 8
    St. Bernardus ABT 12
    Westmalle Dubbel
    Tripel Karmeliet

    USA:
    Boulevard "Sixth Glass"
Ovila branded beers from Sierra Nevada
Blackberry Farms Saisons. they make 2 or 3.

more later. i'm sure @jacq will add to the list.
