do you guys thinks it´s better to do directly the upgrade to USB GEN 5 or to buy Schiit Eitr to have a better flexibility in the future?

I have a Gungnir Multibit old gen USB

I think it's better you read the entire thread and then come to that conclusion yourself before asking questions that have been answered already.

I think only you can answer that question :) USB Gen 5 is the neater solution, since there is no extra box. If you think there is a high likelihood you will sell your Gungnir Multibit in the near future it would better to buy an Eitr, otherwise I would go for the Gen 5 upgrade (which is what I did). Going for the upgrade would also add resale value to your Gungnir Multibit if you ever decided to sell it in the further future.

    Plus what k4rstar said :)

I got my Eitr and a Cthulhu floor wart today. They're being added to my Vali 2/Modi Multibit stack. The Cthulhu is shockingly big, and I'm not sure anyone's posted a photo of it in the wild before, so here's one:

Clockwise from the top left, we have the Eitr, Cthulhu, and Modi Multibit's 16VAC floor wart. Cthulhu's label is pretty great too:

In case anyone's wondering, the digital cable from Eitr to Modi Multibit is an old Monster cable composite video cable I had lying around. It seems to work OK.

Edit: maybe Jason can confirm this, but there appears to be updated firmware in the Eitr because the Audio MIDI app on OS X doesn't offer 32-bit options anymore. I remember there were some people who noticed that if you picked 32-bit words, there wouldn't be any sound. So it looks like Eitr presents just 16- and 24-bit options now.

@Andre Y There isn't an outlet for the Vali 2, is there?

Unfortunately not, so you'll need two outlets for the Vali 2/Modi Multibit stack still. It seems worth getting only if you have 3 of their little boxes running around: it can supply 14VAC, 2x16VAC, and 6VAC.

And wow, the difference Eitr makes is not subtle either. From just initial listening, I hear much more defined bass, and notes stand out in greater relief: there's like less hash in the silence between notes.

I received my Eitr yesterday and placed it between my Microrendu and Yggdrasil DAC. I found an old Wywires LightSPD digital cable in a drawer (hadn't used it for years) and connected it between the Eitr and the Yggdrasil. My system also includes a Tortuga LDR passive preamp a Job 225 amp, a pair of Cain & Cain Abby single driver speakers as well as a pair of Fostex T900A super tweeters and a couple of subs, so the sound was already quite good. What I noticed immediately upon playing Bebel Gilberto Tempo with the EITR in place was a reduction of "noise" so that sounds like bells and cymbal strikes seemed to float in the air away from the speakers with a more natural decay. I have never used any of the USB "decrapafiers" out there, so getting rid of USB noise that I wasn't even aware of allowed music to come to the surface with more 3D. Suffice it to say I am very happy with the Eitr.

The neuroticism and nervousa in this thread is real. If you're receiving dislikes, there's a very good reason why. For the most part, this thread reads more like a head-fi thread than a SBAF thread.

Hello Matt, Congratulations on the Eitr. I have a question if you don't mind. Were you able to play all sample rates up to and including 24/192 with the Eitr in between the microRendu and Yggdrasil? Thanks in advance, Paul

Just finished self-installing Gen 5 on my Yggdrasil.

    Brief impressions:
    - Gen 3 - sound had rough, sharp angle characteristics
    - AES16 - smoother than Gen 3 but sterile
    - Gen 5 - even smoother and seems to have a little more depth than AES16. The sterile-ness that I didn't like seem to be gone. Definitely more enjoyable to listen to. (I wanted to mod my EC ZDT to make the music smoother but after installing GEN 5 this urge is gone, thus my impression).

Overall happy with the purchase 5/5.

Thanks for the impressions. Some silly questions: did you allow sufficient time for the Yggdrasil to warm up again before comparing? Were you using WASAPI playback with both the Lynx card and the USB input or did you try ASIO output as well?

    just WASAPI.

sorry, forgot to put the caveat that these are based on memories/impression that stuck with me when I had different settings on Yggdrasil so ymmv. So no Yggdrasil was not warmed up. I never went back to USB gen 3 when I had AES because the difference was pretty noticeable and didn't feel like A/Bing when it was obvious. AES vs Gen 5 is more subtle.

My headphone system currently goes microRendu+LPS-1>USB>SU-1>Holo Spring KTE 3. Nothing wrong with this, but a teeny red devil sitting on my left shoulder is whispering why not replace the first two stages by RPi 3>Eitr. It would be a fun weekend project to install DietPi+Roon Bridge, to compare the two, and if successful put the mR, LPS-1 and SU-1 for sale in nervousa fora where they might still fetch a good price ;) I know @Torq still favors SU-1 I2S into Spring over Eitr coax, but likely my aging ears can't make those fine distinctions... Any reason not to go ahead with the experiment?

FYI, Eitr works with a 7V DC input. Not that it wasn't expected.
Apologies to the 2 of the diodes in the bridge

Do you mean directly plugging the 7V DC source into Eitr? I am satisfied with Eitr as it is or slightly more in combination with Uptone ISO Regen. However, since I have an extra LPS-1 for 7V output, I might try using it to power the Eitr if there is no safety concern. Thanks.

There should be no problem running a 7V DC input.

The original 6VAC gives 7~7.5V after the smoothing capacitor, before the regulator.
With a 7VDC input, the voltage before the regulator would be 5.6~6V. This might actually be slightly too low for the regulator to operate in its normal range (depending on its drop out voltage and output voltage), but it won't damage anything.
