Would you folks recommend watching the original before 2049?

Will most definitely be catching it in cimenas this weekend, just wanted to know if the prequel would enrich the viewing experience.

Totally agree. Ironically, I found her character the most interesting and intriguing.
That an AI with minimal physical existence was an arguably better developed character than the other more main characters is telling.
Absolutely. No point in watching the sequel without having seen the original. Recommend the theatrical cut (US or Int'l) with voiceover.

@Boops Glad you enjoyed it! I could tell that the soundtrack was intended to add atmosphere to many scenes (and likely would have), but it was just so overpowering at the SPLs in the theatre I saw it in that the effect was ruined. And yes, Jared Leto was just plain weird.

Now we have to fight. ;-)

@muse Definitely see the original. Personally, I'd recommend the director's cut without voiceover. Voiceover was a bad attempt to explain things to the audience that don't need to be, and shouldn't be explained.

Cheers guys. Will catch both films B2B. Pretty excited as I've heard about this film for quite some time.

LOL ... for (many of) those of us who are old enough to have seen the original theatrical cut first, that voiceover is an intrinsic part of the "experience". I watched the "Final Cut" again last night after getting back and I hear the voiceover in my head anyway. Plus there was a "softening" of some dialogue that was just plain wrong.
Roy says, "I want more life, Father" instead of "Porker" - totally ruins the impact of the moment. Plus, the unicorn scene is just plain dorky. You can see the rubber prosthetic wobbling.

    This makes me so sad.

I totally understand this. I was 5 when the original came out and didn't see it until I was in my 30s, when I watched the "Final Cut". A few months back, my wife and I watched the theatrical cut which I'd never seen, and I hated that the voiceover was there.

I think 2049 is, despite its length, actually the more accessible movie of the two. But the script is so strongly tied to the original story, I don't know what it would be like to watch 2049 without the context of the original.

Oh yes, I forgot Bautista. He was very good, too. I thought Robin Wright was good, but a bit too humourless, kind of like most of the characters in many ways. Don't get me wrong, I definitely liked the movie, and am very pleased that it honored the first as much as it does. We are simply talking about the sequel to one of my top 5 (actually top 2) movies of all time, so I have a lot more emotions involved (unfortunately). I wanted just a little bit more. Really, just give me a touch more lightness and humanity - Ana, Mackenzie, and Ford were the only ones that gave me that little bit of character. I also liked the score quite a bit, though with the Inception style BWAAAAAHMs, it will make it harder to listen to on its own (I still listen to the original movie's score quite a bit). I will definitely be seeing it in the theaters one more time and buying it on Bluray when it is released.

BTW, way, way, way better than the admittedly beautiful spectacle that Valerian turned out to be. The Fifth Element was my other top 5 movie that got a new family member this year, and it was a damn travesty.

Added: Overall, I liked the Final Cut the best, though I do agree with Gixxerwimp's critiques of it. The voiceover versions definitely add a Film Noire campiness to it, but in the end, I liked the more subtle story telling of the non-voiceover ones. I have a Bluray set with all 5 versions. Not sure when I'd have time, but might watch all of them again and take notes.

I'm listening to the official soundtrack released in 94 for the first time. Along the lines of the voiceover debate, is there a version with just the music and no dialogue mixed in? And who's stoopid idea was it not to include a proper version of the main titles music?

Sorry if this is getting OT from movie discussion.

I didn't like the first bladerunner very much at all. Its plot is too simple and sparce, and the characters are forgettable, so there was no consequence to the actions took by the replicants. I do appreciate its place in history though, given that it is the grandfather of cyberpunk (at least as far as visual media goes-- novels did it 10-20 years before.)

Having said that, Bladerunner 2049 was a fantastic movie to me. It still had a slowish but very deliberate and realistic pacing to it. The movie was long enough that it allowed for lots of world building and plot building, with details spread throughout. Ryan Gosling is great as he always is. They couldn't have picked a better lead I feel.

Original bladerunner was actually not very well received upon initial release. It's only over the time that a lot of people have developed an appreciation for it because of its effect on popular culture. It is a cult film. Reasons for its initial mixed reviews are the same issues I have with it.

BR2049 was good, imho. Felt deliberately slow at times, but many scenes will be shown in cinema schools. Did feel a bit too fan-servic-ey at times, but nothing too much. When I first got to listen to the soundtrack, I was pretty flabbergasted of what I saw in the spectrum analyzer. Most of the stuff was going on under 40Hz, rarely did it actually go above 7k or so. It was an interesting experience on PM-3's which can do true 20Hz, but the real test was my speakers. Finally I got a glimpse of what my subs are capable of, at times it felt downright terrifying.

Just ordered tickets for my wife and I to see Star Wars on opening day. I was somewhat surprised at how hard it was to find good seats. f**k, it's early October!

No wonder the sound system in my theatre was having so much trouble, and the floor was vibrating the whole time.

There was some kind of damn ladder or loose metal equipment behind the screen when I watched the movie, so every time the score got real loud, that stuff started rattling.

Today I watched Blade Runner 2049 in the cinema.

Amazing film. The acting is superb, even Jared Leto's side character is interesting and the atmosphere of the film (combination of settings and soundtrack/sound effects) really gets you into the vibe of the first film. Hans Zimmer's soundtrack is mesmerising, I stayed to listen to the end of the score.

The best part of the film is that at certain moments you get the impression of "oh that is going to happen" and slowly the plot twists differently. Until the very end this happens and the slow pacing really helps the story. It reminds me of an English detective ("A Touch Of Frost" for instance) yet also introduces deeply philosophical and socially critical topics without ever pandering social justice B.S.

This film is (if you ask me) equally as good as the original. Watch this film slowly, take everything in and pay attention to the soundtrack. Pick the best seat in the cinema and enjoy. I deeply enjoyed this film...

P.S. This is all I can tell you. Avoid reviews and spoiler content, remember the original and watch this film as is.
