Yeah putting the bass driver close to the floor naturally creates a 3-sided baffle with its vertical dimension extended by the floor.

I also think that the D'Appolito arrangement of woofer-widebander-woofer has an important effect on the sound I hear. There are anecdotal reports that D'Appolito setups tend to sound great in rooms that are very wide like mine.

Furthermore a D'Appolito arrangement has a good horizontal but very limited and irregular vertical dispersion. It creates a vertical ''null' zone that is resistant to roof and floor boundary reflections further improving accuracy. In fact the sweet spot is not large in the vertical plane due to the limited vertical dispersion. The horizontal plane is excellent and extends seamlessly into the room.

 

@Muse Wanderer - the WMW arrangement is also time aligned. Otherwise you would need a stepped baffle to time align the drivers, like Serious did with his open baffles.

I have a pair of Dunlavy IV/a’s which use the D’Appolito arrangement which is why I think they are/were popular for use in final mixing. I have them setup in a large room with a vaulted ceiling and openings to the second story. It’s a large amount of air to move. But they are the most accurate pair of speakers I have owned. The bass goes down to 20 Hz. Measured in room. But doesn’t quite slam in the bass like other speakers. But I don’t have any real problems with bass standing waves either. The plus side is they also can play at lower volumes and not wake up my wife if I am listening late at night. The horizontal dispersion often makes the soundstage appear outside the outer edges of the speakers with the right recordings. Mr. Dunlavy actually recommended long wall placement for them if possible. Enjoy!

I have an REL sub which needs repairing. Would like to get a second one and try stereo subs at some point. Money is always a limiting factor.

Edit: I will not have much to say about the John Dunlavy vs. J.A. shitfest that ensued over these speakers. IMHO J.A. took criticism of his measuring rig personally and did not give an accurate description of these speakers. But given events recently not surprised.

Interesting cause I kind of experience a similar sound. This arrangement makes the speaker sound monitor-like from a farfield setting. It is as if the two woofers drive air that keeps the mids and treble within a set space limiting their floor and roof reflection. This results in a very accurate sound that does sound a bit forward in the sweet spot but very clear and accurate within a specific vertical space. (Actually the sweet spot is not a spot but a wide sitting height space.)

The speakers are also placed along long wall and the sound seems to extend beyond them. Despite being a mid to loud volume listener, low spl volume is also enjoyable especially for night listening. I have no use for Utopias just because of that!

 

I’d like to give them a try on a long wall, but it would be a major undertaking as I would have to switch rooms. Great room to living room. T.V. hook-up would require running new cable and driving holes etc. Just not practical. What I really need is a dedicated listening room detached from the house. Well, guess it’s time to move.

In 2011 I was working at best buy. I was just out of college and spending most of my money on my '66 impala, so I was pretty broke. Well best buy discontinued the Klipsch towers, so they were selling the ones used in the Magnolia display room. Back then employees only paid 5% above cost and got an additional 25% off open box and display items. So I was able to pick up the towers for $125 each, msrp was $599 each. I picked up the center, bookshelves and sub at the same time, and paid around $600 for the whole setup with my employee discount.

 

How low are the bass drivers crossed over? It's been my experience that "slam" can only be achieved by feeding a good portion of low mids to big drivers. I'm still unsure if it's "right", but it feels right enough.

 

The two 10 inch woofers have a first order crossover at about 70 Hz. I think it’s more a factor of the volume of air in the room. The room is 30 feet by 19 feet with a vaulted ceiling 13 feet high. Plus an open walkway and stairway. The guy I bought them from had a much smaller room and the low frequencies rattled the windows at his place. And they really had slam. Part of why he sold them. Too much speaker, not enough room. Also Dr. Dunlavy designed them for long wall placement but that arrangement doesn’t pass the wife acceptance factor. They are not a ported design. Mixing studios have said they liked them because of the minimal low frequency room re-enforcement. I’m sure they would have more slam in my family room, but then my late night listening at low volumes would probably be over. Always trade-offs. They are my favorite speaker by far that I have owned. And I’ve owned quite a few over the last 35 years or so.

 

Which XO slopes do you use?
I have found that ''proper slam'' is when there is no dynamics/transient suck-age in anywhere in fr band, most importantly in 70...400Hz region.
As of now I'm unsure that slam is only relevant in this range, more like it appears to be problematic zone for many speakers.

 

30-36db/oct electronic, which comes out to circa 24db/oct acoustic at 80Hz.

Yeah, but the problem is that this suckage doesn't show up in the traditional measurement suite. I mean - I can design two different setups with linear AFR and reasonably low THD and depending on crossover architecture they will sound different.

 

Main Listening Space

I have my speaker set in the most "Wife Approved" location I can manage. Not ideal, but most of my listening is done on headphones (baby/toddler approved), as you might see the chair on the left side. Usually used more for background playback, but when possible, I'll move the speakers out in front of the cab with a slight toe-in. Listening chair is approximately ten feet back. The ol' Pioneer and JBLs really hold up well.

 

I just finished my first speaker setup last night!

Magnepan .7 with 1 DWM, Rogue Audio Sphinx V2 (which you can't see because it's behind the DWM) and VPI Scout II with an SAE 1000 LT cart. Trying to decide if I want to upgrade from the phono in the Sphinx or not, but I'll probably settle and not buy anymore gear for a while.
