Back in the days of Ultrasones, Beyers, and Grado were in vogue, I lamented at the nasty high frequency peaks of many headphones. I knew that making a single driver reproduce the entire frequency range without treble spikes would be difficult; and suggested that headphone manufacturers explore multi-driver headphones, much like multi-driver speakers, where woofers reproduce bass, tweeters reproduce highs, etc. We've seen this approach very successfully implemented in IEMs, and to a lesser extent with headphones (e.g., Dharma D1000).

Today we have a $249 headphone that uses three drivers. You guys can go to the 1more website and read whatever they have to say. I'm not going to repeat it. In fact, I didn't even read it. I did note on the box that 1more claimed that this headphone was expertly tuned by Grammy winning sound engineer Luca Bignardi. I will say that either Luca Bignardi is deaf or sell out. If Luca created an account here, I would still say this to his face.

Note that the 1More Triple Driver Over-Ear Headphone is a supra aural on the larger end of the scale. Those with smaller ears can probably fit them inside the pads. The headphone looks like an open backed headphone, but it is not. It's effectively a sealed headphone (better seal than the TH-X00.)

It's got a cool rim look out the outside. 1more should have offered different "wheel covers" for this headphone.

1More Triple Driver Over-Ear Headphone Frequency Response

The bass is kind of heavy, not excessively so. The highs are bumpy, more than expected for a headphone that I assume with have a dedicated treble driver. The Sennheiser HD650/600's kick this thing's ass in terms of treble smoothness. Overall, the measured frequency response isn't too bad; but it sounds much worse than what the FR would indicate. Let's move on to CSDs.

The most severe issues in the highs lie with the 7kHz and 12kHz ridges. (And 4kHz too, but this doesn't seem to bug me as much as @Hands would be bothered). The 7kHz CSD ridge is coincident with the nearby 6.5kHz FR null. This is nearly always not a good thing and will be audible. The mitigating factors here are that the ringing is not long lived and the overall treble energy is below the mids. Still, the combination of this and the 12kHz peak is not pleasurable. Think of mosquitoes buzzing around timbre. Definitely reminiscent of some Ultrasones, but not as bad.

And finally, I've saved the best for last. Those familiar with distortion measurements will know at a glance.

High third order distortion in the lows has a distinct sound. There was a word in my head when I was driving to work, but alas I have forgotten it.

Looking at measurements of this one and D1000, found some similarities
    • Relatively higher D3 in bass (compared to good single-driver dynamics, planars, estats)
    • Uneven treble FR
I'm just wondering why. These are exactly opposite results to the originally expected multi-driver effects. What happened? Hmm..

Yes. Very reminscent of D1000 and even Sony Z1R bass. Sort of a fuzzy fuzz fuzz coloration. I remember the words now.

The craptastic low end from the 1more is further compounded by the high second order. It's just a strange heavily distorted mess from the mids on below.

I wonder if they sent Tyll a different sample. His THD numbers appear better.

What do you know.. there’s also a gold coloured version around, which doesn’t have a graphene coating and is tuned differently. It’s being sold under the exact same name.

Quoting from HF, confirmed by the 1more representative there:

    https://www.head-fi.org/threads/1more-h1707-triple-driver-over-ear.849824/page-14#post-14155038

From Tyl’s pictures, he did test the silver version though.

Does it matter if it's graphene, beryllium, or plutonium at this point?

One well regarded reviewer puts it on the WoF, another on the WoT (Wall of Toilet). A lot of people will buy these based on Tyl’s review, though.

So to me it raises the question if there are big differences between samples.

After seeing the CSD’s, I’m happy that I didn’t impulse buy these, though.

Marv's THD results usually look worse than you would expect. Different rigs, different results. And I think he might push the headphones more than others. But it also probably reveals problems other results might not.

WoT just sounds weird. It should be more like ItS (In the Shitter) but people may mistake shit for Schiit and then think it’s good, so maybe BAD (big ass dump) :)

I was surprised by Tyll's review myself since the frequency response didn't seem that smooth to me and I could hear oddities in the bass, though I wasn't sure if I was hearing distortions or the effect of the passive radiator (I wish they hadn't called it a triple driver, it's not like speaker makers get away with calling passive radiators 'drivers', why should headphone makers get to do that? in speakers a passive radiator is in many ways functionally equivalent to a bass port, and I imagine the role is somewhat similar in headphones...)

Besides the bass just sounding 'off' to me (not nearly as clean as I'd like, i.e. Hifiman HE-400i, Onkyo A800 and H900M, AKG K545, Pioneer SE-MHR5 are all better in that department), I had issues with the fit. I have an XL head so these are definitely on-ear for me and that combined with the clamp meant it didn't take long for me to feel the metal ridge of the cup through the earpad foam on any extended listening. Thanks to the glued-on earpads, not trivial to pad-swap either, so they haven't even had that much time on my head.

Tyll does describe in his retirement post https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/thats-itim-out that his hearing is no longer good enough. It's actually the first reason he gives:

"1) My ears are going. They are pretty good for a 60 year old...well, my left ear anyway. But hearing tests have shown the trend. It's just not good enough any more, IMHO, and getting worse. Your brain can compensate for a long time, but at some point it starts getting really hard to do the job of evaluating sound."

So I guess that is why he has started liking stuff that is clearly flawed.

Iirc, Tyll's left ear's at 11 kHz, and his right at 6 kHz, so...

presumably those ridges were not an issue.

I am in a similar situation to Tyll hearing-wise, presumably for the same reasons (57, 50 of them on motorcycles, mostly at speed), but it has pretty much cured my periodic upgradeitis. C'est la vie.

Since we have Golden Schlong awards, the other end of the spectrum might better be referred to as the "Limp Jimmy"

These popped up in my Amazon suggestions. Having never even heard of them before, I naturally looked to see what SBAF and IF had said about them.

It’s like my headphone parents are fighting.
