Not that I can answer for Craig but, excellent single end >> Mediocre balanced. EC tends to build to a price point so building proper balanced really shoots up cost.

I'm sure seeing 7 tubes did scare some people off, and it can get expensive if you don't shop smartly or have a single clue what sort of tubes might already sound good in the circuit. Then again, aren't there other tube amps with less quantity of tubes that would still cost more to roll than 7 6SN7 tubes? Regardless, if given the option to pick similarly good sounding tube amps, and one has less tubes than the other, I'll probably go with the one with less tubes...

Ha, that is true. And good luck if you guys take another shot in that price range. It seems ones options for good tube amps for Senns is limited to the $300-500 bracket, $500-750, and then $2000+. Not to knock on the cheaper tube amps, but you really don't start to see a lack of compromises until that $1K to mid-$1K price point.

Well aware, especially for tube amps. But EC is a business too and I don't think anyone can deny that balanced is very fashionable.

Not a secret: Big EC fan here. Just addictive/enjoyable sound. Wish I had one of each.

Wish I did NOT sell my Balancing Act but had instead tried the new transformers.

Hope they keep designing amps and that I get to keep buying them. Thanks for this article, @velvetx!!

It comes down to what problem are you trying to solve.

Do you have 30 foot runs in your house with all sorts of signal and power cables criss-crossing each other?

If not, balanced lines are retarded.

Do you want more power? Make a design that outputs more power instead of doubling up the parts (and cost).

The only reason we may come out with a "true" balanced amp in the future is because balanced is fashionable. Not because it is the most cost effective way to make a great sounding piece of gear.

If you care about "balanced" more than great sound, please buy from one of our competitors. We really do not want to sell an amp to you.

How would it compare to the transcription amp?

If you ever advertise on HF that should be your banner.

    (Not very likely I know)

Great write up, Nicholas. You didn't mention the Moth Audio stuff though, which was legendary in its uncompromised way also. This does tie in neatly with that!

My Studio is on 100% rotation now (speakers & headphones). And that is not an idle statement.

    Hi,
This is Pieter Treurniet from the Netherlands, manufacturer of Tribute Audio Transformers.
I am glad that my interstage transformer in the Studio amp is performing that well.
One thing however should be corrected.
    Quote:

The Studio Jr announcement so soon after the Studio was a marketing mistake but was made because of the fact that the tribute interstage transformers wouldn’t be made anymore.

    This is incorrect!
I told Craig more than once that interstage transformers would remain available; it seems that the (not)availablity is used as a marketing argument which is "not nice" in my opinion.
It is a fact that my activities have slowed down, but this is primarily related to custom winding transformers for DIY customers.
My professional customers, I'd guess Craig being one of them, will be served without restriction.

While this is good news that there is no shortage of these transformers, I don't like that this marketing argument was utilized. A unique selling point of the Studio was the potential lack of availability of these transformers.
