@Woland more computing power will permit DSD conversion and higher sampling rate output. The Pi2AES is limited to 192.

He didn’t mention the pi2aes, just the pi4. A pi4 can probably do 16fs pcm oversampling with even harder filters over usb. Doesn’t have the grunt for dsd though

@Woland I have the Sonictransporter set up to do DSD64 with poly-sinc-xtr-mp, ASDM5ECv2 upconversion. I could not get this to work on a pi4.

another thing to keep in mind is my music preferences. I listen to metal and pop almost exclusively, and value separation above almost all else. this is also one of the reasons I actually liked the AHB2 amp from benchmark. after that I also value imaging and stage, as well as the ability to convey the energy of the track

I'd be curious as to how it compares to your well liked (I assume you still have it) Gung AKM when it comes to tone, timbre, and "liquidity". As much as I like Schiit's Gung/Yggdrasil MB sound, I crave certain things about the AKM sound in a main rig, but currently only get it through bedside/travel DAP's

The Laconia plotline feels like setup for a next installment (series/movie) if they can find funding and distribution for it. At first I didn't like that plotline, but towards the end I like how they built up to the big reveal of... well, no spoilers here.

Ive got the balanced version. Fake as in the opposite of "real". Which isn't to say it sounds real, I guess it could be better, but in that its a step function increase in "realness", such that everything else I've heard sounds noticeably less real as a result

      4. SoupRKnowva
        SoupRKnowva
realness also isn't a first order effect, its 2nd or 3rd order, a combination of several other things. I would guess micro dynamics, detail, plankton and macro dynamics being the most crucial aspects to creating realness in this context

another thing to keep in mind is that positioning and setup in general with speakers has such a huge impact on sound, and you can't always count on dealers to do that optimally, even if you'd they should be since its their job to sell them

I'd say the Naim Statement was more than enough amplification, but the complete lack of any imaging was most likely due to its size relative to the room. I'd say Khorns do a better job of sounding massive than the Grand Utopias too while fitting into more normal sized spaces.
