    It seems like not paying Paypal fees is tempting to many. I do that myself sometimes.

    Paypal protection has some value to it. My first purchase to LHLabs resulted in me not receiving the product and no communication after the initial one. I ended up opening a Paypal dispute. The day before it was time for me to escalate it to the next level I received a refund. The second time I ordered from LHLabs it was directly from their website and it was presented as "In Stock" so I figured they would mail it to me. (IIRC correctly, Paypal was not an option.) After the initial Trouble Ticket reply stating they would tell Shipping to go ahead and ship it to me, communication stopped. I had no recourse to their not shipping it to me. I ended up receiving it several months later. (The frustration alone would have been worth a Paypal fee although that would be absorbed in the selling price when buying from a company using Paypal.)

    Even from a "trusted seller", things can go wrong. I have not experienced that, but orders from online stores have been delivered to the wrong address and show up in tracking as delivered to my address. Usually it is to a neighbor who will bring it to my house. Sometimes that doesn't happen and I just don't receive the item. All of this is rare, but it does happen. That is the shipping services fault and could happen with any seller.

    Paying Paypal fees is paying for insurance. That is my way of looking at it, anyway. (And I think it is possible that Paypal may someday look into accounts with too many Gifts and follow through with their suspension of Paypal accounts policy.)

    And even thinking all of that, I still Gift sometimes.o_O

    That's actually a violation of CC processor agreements. Companies can lose their ability to accept credit cards if they charge you before shipping (note, this does not apply to paypal). Report the company to your CC next time this happens and cause a stink on twitter, etc.
