The "debate" has got to the point where it's hard to tell the difference between news and satire:

"Donald Trump 'tells Japanese emperor mass shootings can happen anywhere' — in country with no mass shootings"

    vs

"‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens"

I suppose satire matters and is most useful when things are grim and fucked-up, when it can become the only form of straight talking.

Whatever that guy the the white house says (I am not even going to spell his name) only believe it when he pays for it. He is the salesman for his backers and he will sell but he does not have to like his merchandise. Follow the money if you want to know what is going on there.

Sometimes social problems continue to exist because their business models tend to generate revenues big enough to settle the damage claims (or even ignore them) and thus state funded casinos (in the Netherlands) and incompetent public transport agencies/companies (also in the Netherlands) have their place. Read about the "Noord-Zuidlijn" a.k.a. "North-South-line" in Amsterdam that is costing billions and gradually wrecking the old city.

Be it guns, public transport or gambling among others when demand stays high the supply has to keep up so certain business models (however disgusting they may be) stay where they are. Vote with your wallet and stay informed.

    End of semi-abstract rant.

what's wrong about us mainlanders? sure some of us are scum but some of every country are scum. wealth leads to culture and civility and we are still in the process of wealth accumulation.

i am not offended btw, just stating the commie Marxist world view :p

The way I think about all of this is summed up by one of my favorite TV shows, Scrubs.

Who told you this? They were lying. Wealth does not lead to culture and civility. Culture and civility can exist whether or not wealth is present. The idea that was sold to you is an artificial form of civilization; which, as we can see, ain't working out too well on this planet right now.

Careful, mix SBAF and politics with extreme caution. Take it from me.

That's just standard operating procedure in Asia. It's better in Taiwan now, but several years back I was at a friend's place and saw that his DVD player was branded Tobishi. He bought it at the largest electronics chain in the country and hadn't even noticed.

When I was in the navy they used to show us videos of men getting caned to the point where they're bleeding from the lacerations every time we would pull into Singapore as a scare tactic to make us behave well. People on my ship had a penchant for things like punching taxi cab drivers and there was a guy that murdered an old Japanese woman. I think it worked pretty well and I don't remember there being any incidents there.

I kind of wish we had city-states like that in the U.S.

Indeed. Although, as much as I love HK, especially pre-1997, Taiwan is seriously cool. (And it was my first home in Asia so take the bias for what it is.)

I haven't read the rest of the thread so apologies if events have obsoleted me.
