Initial impression: @schiit really screwed the pooch on this one. Should have put a giant orange bulb on the inside to make it glow more. What were they thinking!?!?

Yeah, it sounds amazing and all, but that's not the point.

I'll post more later, but first thoughts:

    • Staging is a non-issue if you're okay with other Schiit offerings. Good depth and layering. Not super wide and it won't magically turn your headphones into HD800s. Get over it. The sound is plenty immersive and the 3D feel is slightly above average compared to their offerings I'm familiar with. Not quite Valhalla 2 level, maybe, but not far off.
    • Right down the middle for me on the bright/warm spectrum. You can crank the volume without getting fatigued.
    • Vali 2 with the punch and clarity turned up several notches.

Fed by Bifrost Multibit (Gen V), stock russian NOS tube. Have only tried the AFO so far. Will move onto the HD650 later.

Close to Valhalla 2 staging and layering? Interesting.

Maybe. It's been a few months since I sold my Valhalla. I'll have a better idea later after I try the HD650.

Point being, there's nothing offensive happening here on the staging front.

12 pages that you apparently didn't read?

@Hands and myself have also chimed in.

Hell no. Magni 3, Jot, and Lyr 3 are all kinda in the same field with staging and layering, i.e. one of their weaker areas. Not that they're bad, but they don't excel at it like the Valhalla 2 or TOTL tube amps. More forward sounding amps. Thankfully, this is about as minor of a "sin" as you can get with an amp, so it's largely a non-issue.

That’s what I was figuring based on yours and marv’s comments. To me the staging and layering was the highlight of the Val 2.

Spent nearly 2 hours with the 650, and agree, though I'm not sure about the Jot, which I sold due to staging issues.

Regardless, staging comparisons for the 650 to the Magni seems about right.

How does this stack up against the Bottlehead SEX 3.0 w/ cs4. They're in the same price range and use case(high power flexible tube amps), but the SEX can drive speakers.

    Hello everyone,
I recently bought the Grado Gh2, and im looking for a Amp / Dac.
Right now im thinking between Valhalla 2 + Bifrost mb or Lyr 3 Mb. Wich one will be the best option for grados? Or maybe Jotunheim or Asgard sound better with them?

    thanks!

    Headstage in general:

    Magni 3 = Jot < Vali 2 <= Lyr 3 < Valh 2 << EC

With Grados, either Valh 2 or Lyr 3. Valh 2 will give a nice boost to bass but sound slightly more veiled. If you don't need mid-bass boost, Lyr 3 might have better tonal synergies. The better layering of Valh 2 might not be as noticeable on Grados.

So as I understand this, Jot and Magni 3 have the largest headstage?

Exactly Opposite I would think. Can't imagine a Jot having better stage than an Eddie Current.

Does the Lyr 3 work with IOS lightning to USB like the latest Modi DACs?

I'm very very curious at this point to see where tube rolling will take things. Not to improve the sound, but simply to tweak for particular headphones/tastes.

I'm fully satisfied with the stock tube for the AFO.

With the 650, I'm finding I'd like to darken things up a bit.

I'm too lazy and cheap to buy a bunch of tubes. Waiting for the rest of you to do the hard leg work for me, so I can reap the rewards. :drunk:
