How about just buy a cotton bedsheet, and cut out pieces to fit inside the cardboard? Cut a rectangle, fold over the cd, slide that back into the case. With a snug enough fit, they'll never slip out.

Or slip a paper sleeve like this into the cardboard:

Wouldn't that paper scratch the disks over time? I primarily listen to CDs so I'm moving them in and out of cases regularly. I figured soft plastic would be a better fit.

I think that you're on the right track demoing the Aeon Closed. Let us know what you think.

Hi everyone. I am interested in gaining some expertise in the planning and design of tube/valve amplifiers. I am a novice at this point, but interested in learning exactly what goes into a great amplifier and why certain choices are made. Can anyone recommend good reading material? Tired of building from kits without fully understanding what I am doing.

I formerly used a few apps for periodicals (Zinio specifically), and I found the performance of them to be really good on 9.7" iPads. I currently have a 12" iPad Pro and I really can't complain. I mostly use it for Comixology/Amazon purchased digital comics now. I highly recommend Apple products where user experience is desired.

Going to Singapore for a couple of days for vacation. Plan to spend a couple hours testing out gear. Anybody here know a one-stop-shop with all the sweet audio delights?

I reckon have a look at this site:
    https://wtfamps.com
which has both an idiot's guide to tube amps and also a bunch of projects with some detailed discussion of design choices, all written in a way which isn't as dry as all balls.

@Garns This looks to be exactly what I’m looking for. A Dynaco ST70 built by my grandfather was the first amplifier I ever owned and is what got me interested in audio in the first place. Glad to see the first article shown is in regard to that amp. Thanks!

Which compliments the padauk more? A or B.

    I think A, but 2 people I know think B.

Seeing the two types of wood I would be concerned more about their structure. Both padauk and the other wood have pronounced wood texture and these textures are significantly different - padauk is more "diffused" (the texture has smoothish transients) while the other wood has very strict edges of the texture. Given that, these woods may not go well together (however, I do not know what the final product/application will be etc. - YMMV, just thinking out loud).

Colorwise, the A is nicer match but if applied on big surfaces it may become too dark.

I'm going against the grain (budum tish) and saying B. Paduak darkens considerably with time in my experience if you are using an oil finish. In the long run I think the lighter contrast will work better.

    Also, hiyo from WTF!

B was a Bolivian Rosewood. A was Ziricote.

    I went with A.

I'm about 1/2 way through it. The build so far: https://imgur.com/a/EAWZlPy

It will have ziricote trim around the sides and top as well. I ran out of time to cut those pieces, so I'll have to do that later.

Finish will be a shellac sanding sealer with a epifanes UV resistant varnish (so the padauk red stays red). That's a long ways down the road though. It is going to take time to get this to the glue up and sanding phase, let alone the finish.

    Interesting finishes you're planning.

Since the stuff I make had to be held in sweaty hands I always go with natural stuff (linseed, walnut) because synthetic stuff invariably feels weird when damp.

I use BLO for anything like that. Like you said, better feel.

I don't know of anything that has better UV protection, which is why I'm sticking with the epifanes varnish. Otherwise I would probably just use Tru-oil. I normally try to stay away from poly. It always seemed to me that putting plastic on top of wood was contradictory to the point of woodworking.

I might be ready to move up from mid-fi purgatory in the next 6 months or so. I'd like to get a solid next level headphone amp that's a noticeable jump up from the Magni 3 /MCTH/Lyr 2/ MicroZotl stuff I've owned in the past. Primary headphones will be HD-650 and I might even go with HD-800 in the future. I like micro details and bigger soundstaging. I also like the long decay of some tube designs, but not quite to the point of warmpoo. Annoyances are midbass bloat. Bonus would be if the headamp also doubled as a competent pre-amp.

Price range is 3k max. But if there are some awesome contenders for significantly less then that would be great too.

I'm kinda drawn towards the EC and DNA stuff based on comments here. I've never heard anything from either. I would also be open to something used.

    Thanks guys.

Kind of sounds good be more after a Stratus, Aficionado or Mogwai SE? Maybe an EC 2A3?

I mean, for cheap there's the cayin HA-1A but as good as it is it's also firmly on the other side of the big boy tube amp divide.

Kind of hard to tell what you want on the EC Studio <-> Woo Somethingorother tubeyness scale.
