For modders only, a "bass heavy" K-340 in NM-/VG+ condition at a fair price.

    https://www.head-fi.org/classifieds/akg-k-340-hybrid-electrostat-dynamic-headphone-the-legend.45151/

The "bass heavy" is harder to mod than the "bass light." But, according to two old timers who know these headphones inside out, the results are better. One of those chaps has a modded "bass light," and he, too, says that the modded "bass heavy" is better.

If you're wondering how it sounds, I know only the stock "bass light." And, of the headphones I heard, it has the most in common with SR-225i, but it's a lot richer in the mids (assuming you amp it right).

Another two-fer post on Enlightened Audio Design DSP-7000 DACs. I already own two, and absolutely love them - paid about $600 apiece. If I had more money and less sense, I’d be scooping these up:

$650 + shipping on eBay, but they just sent me an offer for $500, so, add it to your wishlist and you’ll probably get the offer, too.

And this one is $550 with free shipping. Comes with the more aesthetically pleasing gold faceplate, too.

price is ab par for the course, i'd say. and looks like this model does have AES in place of toslink optical too, but if someone does buy this, I'd urge them to try both AES and coax, both shape the stage v differently. looks like this guy has the original box and paperwork too lol.

some things if you're actually looking to buy this amazing DAC:

    1. ask for multiple internal photos (if you don't know what you're looking at/for, post to SFD-1 thread)
    2. ask ab any recent servicing from either PCX or a local audio shop, and most importantly,
    3. ask ab ANY distortion, crackling or hissing noises coming from the DAC

Caveat emptor: story time. i bought an SFD-1 and it worked for 1.5 months before the DAC started to give out, and the seller even told me there was distortion upon startup, but said Chris from PCX didn't think there was anything to worry ab, so I didn't mind.

Didn't really hear anything (even upon startup) until--like i said, ab 1.5 months in, and then it became not only on startup, but somewhat intermittently, then every hour I'd hear some crackling, then it became every couple of tracks, and it finally got so bad it was 100% unlistenable--the distortion was just max all the time.

These UA modules were epoxied on bottom so that no one could figure out what Lavry had done to make them sound so good (and the funny thing is, the UA 20400A in there is actually a hybrid DAC--multibit for the MSB, and sd for the LSB) and 30 years of heat + epoxy just don't mix. I had to dremel out the module when replacing mine, it was so stuck in... not a fun time.

BUT otoh, lotsa people have SFDs (1, 2, and Processor 3s) that are working just fine in their original state, so def just ask ab noise coming from the DAC, and any replacements/upgrades done to the DAC. post in the SFD-1 thread if you have any questions.

and watch out for vibes from this seller, like @Biodegraded said. if you feel anything is amiss, abort. if they won't send photos or act even a lil shady, follow your gut feeling.

oh, and this DAC looks like it doesn't come w any tubes, so that also could be a reason for the lower price. budget ab $200 at least for good 6922s/ecc88s/e88ccs or similar.

edit: actually, if you end up buying this DAC, i may have some tubes for you so you can at least use it when it arrives. PM me if you're buying and interested.

on the same lines about things to consider before buying a "used deal" would also be to look for tell tale warning signs before you press the buy now button

This is mentioned in several different locations but i saw an excellent example this morning - Pass Labs HPA-1 For Sale | Audiogon

Warning #1 - unreal price of $444 for an amp which is typically sold around $1500-2000.
Warning #2- this price is also revised price it was earlier $644
warning #3 - close inspection of the pictures reveals that the amp is wired for 220-240v operation, though the listing mentions no such thing.
Warning#4 - free shipping to all countries
Warning #5- brand new account with no prior transactions or feedback.

This could certainly be a poor listing where the owner seems to have no idea about how things should be listed. However, there are so many red flags. Yes you can buy and recoup your expenses through PayPal, but you would waste time and effort that you could spend listening to your existing system.

I don't think there was ever a "final edition", this looks like the "We already have Cavalli Liquid Gold at Home Edition". Also, all the text on the front plate of the real amp is carved into the chassis and not painted. This knock off just has shitty white text printed on it, and around the volume knob.

I'm a dumb dumb and didn't Google hard enough. Disregard my misinformation.

I was looking through the Head-fi Liquid Gold thread and did find a few more units with the painted front plate: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/liquid-gold-2014.702014/page-29#post-12950349. Apparently the painted front plate is from the 2nd production run of the Liquid Gold.
