I should really have learned that ages ago, I blame my enjoying this hobby too much and wanting other people to have fun too. Hell, the rest of their gear is pretty decent, so I thought it'd be a waste to "settle" for a JDS ODAC. Gragh.
Kinda wondering at this point if they'll be able to hear a difference even if I had them listen to a DAVE or Pavane (neither of which I've heard myself but seem to be well-loved), considering how mulish some people can be about being right.
But yeah, I start a new job later today, don't need the extra stress XD
The more we try to convince those people they're wrong, the more they'll think we're paid shills of the audio industry or something. Better to just let them keep deluding themselves...arguing with them just wastes time & energy and if anything makes them more convinced that they're right.
It depends how deep they are. If it's because they are just starting and read some NWAVGuy and Tom's Hardware and are afraid of wasting money, then I think its worth discussing a bit. If it seems like all they care about is proving you wrong then its better to stop now rather then let it drag on for 50 pages.
There are certain people whose only posts consists of saying that DACs don't matter and that all you need are opamps. People like Xnor and CastleofArgh. They must be fun at parties.
There is madness on both sides. Someone might say, "It is not that expensive or difficult to achieve transparency." That may or may not be correct (not trying to start the argument here) but how then, in somebody else's head, does that become "everything sounds the same so you might as well buy xDAC."?
@yotacowboy HAHA, that's one way to go about it, but I doubt it's worth the effort of trying to stuff a proper DAC into my pocket to whip out at my convenience :P
@nithhoggr Or worse, that people who DO spend on nice DACs etc are merely trying to justify their purchases and are unable to hear unbiasedly as a result. That's just character assassination!
@Cspirou Hard to tell, really. Dude's got some not-crap gear (e.g. Audeze EL 8, Lake People G109, Senn IE8), just seems to be a massive DAC skeptic. He does seem like a CastleofArgh type, so I gave up engaging not long before posting this.
Really though, their saying it's *all* a matter of reducing jitter is kinda oversimplifying it, no? Kinda gives you a hint of where they usually read.
@Thad E Ginathom What the gent I was speaking with said was "the ODAC does a great job and measures exceptionally well", which sounded a bit off to me, so I got hooked into engaging. Definite madness on both sides though.
Granted, it was my fault for initiating and suggesting an ODAC may be a bottleneck given the rest of his chain (they posted a WTB for one in a FB group I'm in for $90), but gah.
Also, @ButtUglyJeff, they do save money in the end, though, so not sure who the actual winners are LOL
By the way, just as a mental exercise, for the everything-sounds-the-same crowd, you could try saying that everything /could/ sound the same if simple transparency was /everybody's/ design criteria. But it isn't, and never will be.
The actual criterion is anything from house sound to broken!
