For me, the worse kind of audio reviewers are the ones that don't compare with anything or make absurd comparisons (50k 4-way speaker vs 1k 2-way bookshelf, for example) as they don't add anything more useful than reading the manufacturer's website (pt 1)
However, the "one listen" music reviews are even worse than the meaningless gear reviews, as they affect the artists intent in a negative way, good work needs comprehension and total comprehension takes time. You know, there's no Hi-fi without music...(pt 2/ end of rant)
Speaking of the intersection of audio and music. I read about some music reviewer that listened to everything through apple earbuds. I guess an argument can be made that most people listen to music this way. But really, take your job a little more seriously and invest in quality gear.
I agree @Cspirou, something like the Sennheiser HD5xx line is not expensive and would do the trick, it's also a good idea to have the apple earbuds as a reference too, but not as the only way to review music, that's irresponsible imho
Also some sort of two channel system. Even though most music is enjoyed through headphones, in the studio they mix it for speakers. Get some lsr308s on standmounts.
