Trying to Google what this even is. ALL cell phones in the state get sent an emergency SMS message for a missing child?

@JustAnotherRando Yes, and it has helped rescue hundreds of children. It has also shown to be a deterrent with cases where kidnappers release the victim when an Amber alert goes out.

But sure, let's get rid of it because our phones buzzing about it every once in awhile (you can turn this off) is a nuisance.

How often do these pop up? I've been to the US loads of times and never noticed the concept there. (Or in any other country that I've lived in.)

This is just personally around my area, but maybe once every couple months or so.

Yes, all f'ing phones in the area get this message. The specific alarm and buzzing are particularly jarring, especially when one is driving is sleeping! Kids in the El Lay area must get kidnapped on a monthly basis. Hate the fact I need to Google how to turn if off. The settings are buried. All phones should come with it turned off by default. The state should let me decide in advance.

Lives saved in reality are zero or close to zero. Most of this shit involves familial disputes.

Just because it is a father, mother, aunt, whatever that kidnaps the child doesn't make it less severe. Close to zero? Show me the receipts. In the meantime I think 5 mins of googling is a tiny "price" to pay for saving children, even if it is only a few. Lives are priceless, especially the most vulnerable of us like children.

Ultimately it's a question of ethics. How much in taxpayers funds does one life cost?

Taxpayer cost as a basis for the worth of a life? Where does that leave the chronically ill, the infirm or other "useless mouths"?

It's sad and difficult question to answer. We can frame it another way. What if we could save more lives diverting Amber Alert funding? Perhaps provide morning breakfasts to the disadvantaged? Or even basic health care to 100 families for a year for every alert not issued? My bet is you guys don't know what it's like to be poor. I grew up poor.

Nicely put. I agree with you about the difficulty of responsibly allocating funds. Consider the fiasco of abstinence-only education. The money is out there. But its allocation is driven more often by politics than by solid research.

While a nice thought and something to consider, you know the funding wouldn't be put to good use. This is America. It would probably end up in some rich fucks pocket before being used to help people.
