The UK really got Rock going from the British Invasion. Canterbury Scene was great. Then most of my favorites were from the UK during the early 70s Glam period. I remember wondering why so much musical goodness was coming from the UK. (Later read about the art school thing.)
Then, Punk/New Wave period, probably. I can't think of a wave of special music from the UK after that. (Maybe my memory needs refreshing.)

    Time for the knock-out:

    Chuck Berry, "Johnny B. Goode."

    Lennon was right...

@Dino interesting point. Makes me admit that I indirectly said that new wafe/punk/RnB/rap are inferior vs rock/alternative/indie (in general with a touch of stereotype).

I did kind of the same thing, @TRex . I have pretty eclectic tastes but when you posted "music" my mind went to "Rock" because that is what I listen to the most.

If you had made the argument citing King Crimson, yeah I would have agreed ;-)

The UK had better rock in general it feels like, but America had some absolute titans, The Velvet Underground/Lou Reed, REM, Pixies, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Talking Heads, The Stooges/Iggy Pop, The New York Dolls, Beck, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Prince, etc.

America absolutely dominates for jazz, soul/R&B, and hip-hop/rap.

REM, Santana, Pixies...sure. Personally, I'm not into Beck & Prince (forgive me).

Agree US dominates jazz, soul, blues...although it wouldn't be possible had slavery wasn't existed. (Could phrase the sentence better)

Most of that music does originate in one form or another from devotionals, which were songs sung by slaves while they worked. So yes, that is correct.
