Spend on Iems and listen via whatever phone/laptop you already have.

I agree with @Kunlun . Some people don't like IEMs and I was going to suggest Sennheiser HD598 SE for a pleasant over-the-ear alternative for around $100 - $150 on sale. They look like they are going for over $200 right now, unless used.

The 598's usually go on sale preXmas if I'm not mistaken.

I got a pair on Amazon Black Friday 2015 for $95, then they went up to $150. Amazon isn't stocking them atm and there has been a big price spike from 3rd party sellers. http://tinyurl.com/ydbn54ng

HD6__ are much better headphones. Only thing is, I'd want an amplifier for them.

And lets not forget the KSC75 w/ Parts Express Headband. I think I'd take that over either the HD558 or HD598. I think.

I think I'd go with the portapro instead of the KSC75 (which i do own and have tried with headband).

Agree with @Kunlun. IEM with the tonal balance you like. Sub 200$ I'd probably still go for a TWFK IEM and those can be had much cheaper.

I would suggest Fulla 2 with PortaPro. Laptop Out may work for some, but it's pretty horrific and noisy in my case, and I expect I'm not alone. For me stuff like FiiO X3 as a USB DAC made a palpable improvement over anything else Out, so I wouldn't skimp on a minimal DAC/amp combo if possible...

In IEM land, if the person wants something bass light, just get an RE-00, throw on comply tips, and call it a day.

@Claritas Have you heard the KSC75? I liked it (with the headband) more than the XPT100. What are your thoughts about the PX100ii?

@imackler I still have a pair somewhere. It's impressive for its price (especially when amped), but the Sennheiser is more even in the upper-mids / lower treble. It also has a larger soundstage, which is nice for orchestral music.
