I bought a router (2 1/2 HP Dewalt) and a circular saw (Dewalt also) for speaker building (among other things). In fact, I bought a pair of ND91-4 and ND16FA-6 drivers to build my own version of the Helium w/o my own crossover. I'm targeting 70 Hz with 11" port 1 1/4" diameter. The 0.04 lt box from PartsExpress is too small IMO. Too boring to just buy it also.
I recently got a Dewalt plunge router with a Rockler mini table, and a few blades for my landlord's table saw. I was able to justify the purchases with the girlfriend since we are also going to be building most of the furniture for the apartment we are currently renovating.
Acquiring new tools is always good. But the expensive-new-tool for just-one-job thing? Depends on the cash/utility balance. If it makes your speakers better and quicker, and you can afford it, then no-brainer is the word. And hey, build more speakers!
In my experience, power tools make tasks quicker, but not necessarily easier, and often actually require learning new skills.
But if you have the skill to be building speaker cabinets in the first place, you are half-way there. My speaker cabinets would look horrible, whatever tools I used.
