Yeah I'd heard that but wasn't sure how bad it is. It fits the bill for what I'd like in a cheap closed-back except for that little detail. I don't want to combat airplane noise by cranking the volume. I'd rather shut it out but don't always want to use IEM's.
Cal will not isolate very well. I could send you my Beyer custom streets to try, but they are on ears and will not shut out as well as some over ears. After 10 years of plane travel with over ears, I can safely say iems are better at noise reduction.
Focal Spirit pro and nad visio 50 are good sounding and isolate well, next step down might be ATH-50X. Large ears may be problem with first 2. Oh, the DT-150s if you are not concerned about "stares".
I’d love to find something about the same price as CAL but maybe up to $100. I have used IEM’s for years traveling as well but now with two kids I’d love the convenience and quick on/off of headphones.
Oh yeah, prefer circumaural. I like my 650’s and I like my Noble X but I’m not locked into those sound sigs. I’m not a bass head but I want it there, just balanced.
UE6000 are decent for travel. They fold up and do a decent job of isolating. I think they sound pretty good. A little darker than the CALs if I remember correctly.
Can't beat wireless for convenience; I have Avantree Audition, lo-fi and boxy rolled off sound (fixable with EQ) but also light and cheap, controls on the left earcup.
Momentum if you want to pay more - Dr Higgs is selling some.
