RCA 5692s in the output stage, Sophias in gain stage. Plain ol' regular non-mariokart, but the guy i got them from said they were "grade A" so tight section matching, etc.
I've got a set of Psvane treasure MKII CV-181s coming in about a week - between the P-vane UK 6sn7 (old/original), the Sophias, and the (unheard yet but based on the non-treasures) Treasures, I'm willing to give up NOS tube chasing on ebay...
just my humble opinion, but compared to all the NOS stuff I've played with in the freya, the new gen chi-fi tubes are pretty f'ing solid. no more screechy mess like the old Shugs from the early 2000's.
Thanks for all the feedback. I'm running a quad of EH 6SN7's and they are quiet and do the trick via speakers. I prefer to use the JFET buffer for headphone listening. Any comment on the Sophia's with HP's? I'm glad you got the Mario(kart) references, I have been playing a shit-ton of Mariokart 8 on the Switch.
Yup, if you get a good pair of Sophia's they are amazing for soundstage. I went through two sets of 2A3s and ended up returning them as they didn't meet my standards but gbeast's pair is dead silent, sounds amazing and like you said, soundstage monsters. I'll be grabbing one for Saga when I get one.
Great. My power amp uses 7 6SN7’s. I can hear it now. “Honey I need new tubes for my amp. What? Oh they’ll only run about $700. No, they will eventually have to be replaced. Why are you looking at me that way?”
@zerodeefex: Yellow or green lettering? I've got a pair of 1950 2-hole, black plate bottom getter Sylvanias that I havent tried yet. I'll pop them in this morning and give a listen.
