Not wanting to hijack some other thread, I decided to start a new one. I now have the transducers for my high efficiency "desktop" bi-amped speaker project. The midrange/treble will be handled by a Fostex FE108-SOL which I will try open baffle and with rear sealed chamber. I chose this driver based on its efficiency and frequency response extension and smoothness for a full-range driver. For woofer I will use the SB Acoustics Satori WO24P-8 and operate them definitely open baffle, my favorite for bass. I chose this woofer based on its low Fs, big xmax, shorting rings for distortion reduction, and excellent venting of the spider and center pole. Next I will start on the baffles and frames.

Can you hazard a guess on how much mech max excursion can these Satoris handle?
Based on modeling single WO24P-8 won't go loud enough to my liking before hitting xmax in closed box/OB scenario.
The price to performance (on paper at least) of the whole Satori range is irresistible.
I'm currently trying to nail down which is better 2x Wo24P-8 or 1x SB34NRXL75-8 for effortless dynamics and low level responsiveness. These should be close...

I just sweep tested the Satori free air and it is very quiet with minimal extraneous noise. I would say maximum mechanical excursion is at least 20mm peak to peak, probably closer to 24mm p-p.

Nice, a 1.5 way crossover? Desktop open baffle is super interesting! I'm sure I"m not the only one with real bookshelves on my desk sitting on isoacoustics

Oh god, you're going to embarrass my $1000 all in build aren't you? :)

Can't wait to see more of this project.

It's been 2 months, where are the pics? A small open baffle seems like the perfect first diy speaker for me.. especially since I have a firstwatt coming and this would be high sensitivity
edit: maybe we could get Selah audio to offer this as a kit

The bass section certainly won't be. My big OBs are only high sensitivity because of the huge baffles, My crossover is actually tuned for an infinite baffle bass and doesn't compensate at all for the OB rolloff. This only works in my room with the sloped ceiling and only works because my baffles are effectively 1.6m wide.

I just realized I started this thread back in March and haven’t made any progress on the project since then :(. Yes, it’s been a busy year at RIVA but it’s time to make to some time and work on it.
