I'm blaming Capitol. The same engineer who did all of her wonderful-sounding stuff, Gary Paczosa, is on hand, so either the producer (Buddy Cannon) or the mastering engineer (Gavin Lurssen), or both, should be dragged out behind the barn and shot.

If you search "Mark O'Connor Berklee" on YouTube, you'll find a number of clips from a concert that he did with students in the Berklee American Roots program in about 2009. Check out "A Bowl of Bula" in particular: Hull, Jacob Joliff (ex-Joy Kills Sorrow), and Eric Robertson on mandos and Courtney Hartman (Della Mae) and Julian Lage on guitars. Ridiculous.

^^Nice! There are a few of my favorites that you've listed. Julian Lage is amazing on guitar.

I'm not sure you'd classify him as folk, but I'm a huge fan of Jackie Greene.

Lucinda is one of my favorites too. I've seen her several times, last one a couple of months ago at The Aladdin, Portland. She still sounds great!

    Nice list, thank you.

I'll tell anyone I can about Sturgill Simpson, but I'm excited to work my way through some of the older gems on here.

Yes, I saw her in Athens, GA last year. Great concert. Her current road band Buick 6 is excellent backup for her.

Richard Buckner is doing an acoustic living room show here in Waco next month. I'm thinking about going. Though I haven't listened to him a whole lot compared to other artists I like I feel like this is kind of a special opportunity. Here's the first Buckner song that ever kind of caught my attention (yeah I was late to the party)

Speaking of living room shows, I once went to one of the numerous "unofficial" shows of SXSW. It was in musical artist Redding Hunter's living room. It was really freakin' amazing. One SXSW artist after another coming in and out, mostly along folksy/Americana lines. Some of the artists that performed that day were St. Vincent (on the cusp of releasing her first album), Matthew Houck/Phosphorescent, Redding Hunter/Red Hunter/Peter and the Wolf performing with Dana Falkenberry, Ray Raposa of the Castanets was hanging out and listening but he never performed. There was another girl who performed who was a big upcoming indy name and I'm totally blanking on her name. Best performance was Matthew Houck. Really just had the entire room on the edge of our seats.

    Two great albums out recently.

James Elkington Wintres Woma, sort of a bit like Scott Walker crossed with John Fahey.

Big Thief Capacity. This is a folk tinged indie record with just incredible songwriting chock full of super pretty melodies and chord progressions.

I've been listening to Kronos Quartet's latest album Folks Songs over the past month or so since it came out and it's really good. Each song is a collab with one of 4 different artists and I highly recommend checking it out. Here are a couple of tracks:
    With Natalie Merchant:

    With Sam Amidon:
