Great on vinyl too, very noise free and dynamic! And the music is great. Would make an excellent album to listen to on Christmas instead of more Little Drummer Boy. Thanks for the suggestion.;)

I have recently discovered Jackson Brown's For Everyman album. This was recorded at different times with a few different musicians, but the title track, For Everyman, gets me everytime and transports you right there in the middle of the studio if you are listening to on a good system:

I posted this in the main thread, but maybe it's better here.

It's folk, but not Americana. It's possibly a little stark and emotionally scarring, but an excellent piece of work.

Reminds me of Mark Kozelek. In a good way.

I recently got the Doc and Merle Watson (and T. Michael Coleman, Doc's bass player of many, many years) vinyl of 'Never The Same Way Once', recorded live at The Boarding House on May 2, 1974, by Owsley Stanley of Dead/Acid Test fame, and mastered by Paul Stubblebine. 2 lp, 45 rpm, it's the first vinyl release of The Owsley Stanley Foundation, who maintain a large collection of Owsley's live recordings. All analog start to finish, 1/2 speed mastered. More info from the jacket:

Mastering engineer Paul Stubblebine began from the original Nagra IV-a 15ips quarter-inch two-track analog tapes. The songs were compiled onto one-inch, two-track analog tape; lacquers were cut directly from that, mastered at half-speed to be played at 45 RPM. The playback machine was an Ampex ATR-100 built by Mike Spitz of ATR Service, with electronics from Tim de Paravicini and heads from Flux Magnetics. That fed directly to custom cutting electronics, designed and built by Nelson Pass. The lathe was a highly modified Scully 601 with a Neumann SX-74 head.

Pretty stellar recording/mastering chain, and it shows. I've only heard two sides-okay, listened to all four while writing this-the sonics are very good, nice tone, attack and decay on the guitars, all three instruments locked on the stage. Doc's vocals, oddly, seem to wander just a bit, though he seems to always end up in the center. Applause sounds like actual humans putting their hands together, always a good sign! Frankly, I probably should have saved my money and not bought the CD box set previously: though it sounds very good, it's not this good, and four consecutive nights of (a lot of) the same show at the same venue might be only for DW completists. Though it's very unlikely I'll get rid of it. ;) And I do want to support The OS Foundation in hopes we get more releases like this.

It's a VPI Prime, with an SDS motor control, nothing very exotic. I got the JMW 10 arm that's playing a record from @brencho (thanks man!), it has a Denon DL-103R cart installed in a wooden body. The JMW 10 3D arm that came with the deck has a Dynavector DV-20XL hooked up. So there ya' have it!:D

Now you need to check out - Late For The Sky - The Pretender. None of his work is time dated.

Recorded by one of my co-workers back in 2007 or so. We both wound up in IT, but this is a pretty great sounding album.

You never know the kind of music and recording talent there is here in Nashville.

I highly recommend checking out Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer's "Child Ballads". Their renditions are beautiful, as is the way their voices flow together. All of the songs are great, but this one especially:

Time to dig this thread up again...

I've been getting antsy with my current music selection, so I'm looking for some folksy recommendations. Who are some of your favorites? My definition of folk is pretty broad, so feel free to include gospel, bluegrass, country, folk rock etc.

For reference, I enjoy Elliott Smith, Cat Stevens, Simon & Garfunkel, Johnny Cash, Nick Drake, Conor Oberst, Kings of Convenience, Fleet Foxes, Iron & Wine, Ray Lamontagne...
