Has anyone seen or heard about Kimi no Na wa? This is apparently the first non Miyazaki animated movie to make more then 10 billion yen in box office. Unfortunately, there is only a 480p rip of this in english at the moment and it has both hardcoded subs for CN and EN. I don't know if we have any natives to Japan on here but I would love to hear more about this. Apparently it's the bees knees.

Unless you are in dire need of English dubs

I personally prefer original Japanese voice actors for most shows myself, and honestly I haven't actually watched this (waiting for the proper Bluray), but I have spent some time with the OST cos the songs are by RADWIMPS. Anyway, it is by Shinkai Makoto who has made plenty of excellent movies, such as Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo and Byosoku 5 cm (5 Centimeters Per Second), all of which have great if similarly themed BGM.

I am not a huge fan of the English dubs. I feel that the original voice actors are what make the show much better. It's hard to get the same good feeling from the english voice actors since the voice and character rarely go together. I do think that the Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon dubs were rather good though, but then again they are normally the exception to this matter. I think I will wait for the proper Bluray as well since the animation is what adds to this movie. Thanks for the link though! I haven't heard of RADWIMPS but I will definitely check it out since you are so passionate about them.

No problem. Technically the link is 720p, but online compression probably means that you will see square artefacts popping up especially in the dark parts, which may or may not matter to the viewer. I am unfortunately a purist in this respect for movies at least, so I guess it's good that I can be patient.

Started reading "Akatsuki No Yona" and the manga is pretty decent.

Right now waiting for updates of the Berserk manga. Some panels are pure art of an astounding level.

Makoto Shinkai is one of my favorite creators. I have all of his films that I've been able to get my hands on. His first films were all done, completely by himself, on his home computer. They tend to focus around long-distance love and and the inability for two lovers to be together.

"Your Name" will eventually be released in outside of Japan on Blu-ray.

Oh, I heard this was a pretty good anime. Not to sure about the manga but it must be decent if the anime got 24 episodes.

    HAHAHAHAHA.. oh... you were serious.

Yona of the Dawn is OK. I watched the anime.

If you are looking for something similar that is much, much better, I'd recommend the Red River manga series or the 12 Kingdoms anime or books (only the first few volumes were translated to English, you'd need to read Japanese for the rest).

Watched Kimi no Na Wa in the cinemas. I recommend Ryu and for anyone reading this thread NOT to watch the online rip, because not seeing it in cinemas or with blu-ray quality is a huge disservice to the overall experience. This film is worth going the extra mile.

Other than that, I also saw Koe no Katachi and it definitely challenges Kimi no Na Wa for best anime film in 2016. Probably KyoAni's best theatrical release yet.

I think it is the best he's done to date.

But I agree, in terms of writing and storyline, I just don't think it's up there with the greats. It's never horrendously bad... ...a step above, but I've never come away thinking too much about the characters or stories.

I mean, this one did a little bit. I kinda wonder about the history with his family and such. Won't say more, but I appreciate that some possibilities were left just unexplained enough for me to draw my own conclusions. It's a little different from the usual emotional bludgeoning I'm used to with his films. Bit more show and a little less tell. Also doesn't have that waxy, cryptic dialogue problem. That killed 5cm for me.

I feel like the main plotline wasn't interesting enough. Woulda rather had it be less about saving the town and more about the characters saving themselves. That would have really hooked me. I feel like the setup for that was perfect, only to be ruined by that drawn-out climax with a weak payoff. By the end, I felt like nothing important really happened.

I will, however, always watch his films because of how gorgeous they are to look at. TBH I have never cared much about anything happening in his films. I just stare in awe at all of the photogenic imagery. That alone keeps me watching from start to finish.

I've also just gotta say... ...his films are great stay-at-home date movies. Shinkai films are kind of a thing with me and my girlfriend. The mood and tone is perfect for just cuddling up and relaxing with your special someone. That's really what they're best for.

Would have done it if it was showing in a cinema near me, simply because of RADWIMPS (the band playing the theme song), have a real soft spot for them.

Started with Death Note, the manga.

Sinister, humorous and very well written. Manga of that level, stories of that level are a treat...

You're in for a good treat. Death Note is one of those that truly stands out on its own, although I'd say watch the anime if you can, as it really brought the story to life. Spare some time too for the author's other work, Bakuman. Completely different genre about the life of a manga author, but no less engaging. It certainly helps that "being an otaku" wasn't abused as the protaganists' motivation in this story.

Figured you guys would REALLY enjoy this. The latest single of Porter Robinson. Check out his album "Worlds" if you enjoy the song.

Here's a translation of the letter that flashes on-screen for a split second. Feel free to critique the translation, RAW below.

    To Rin
    From : Dad
There was just so little time left after you were born.
I don't know how much love I managed to pour into raising you after your mother died...
But your smile kept me going. (^_^)

I would like to have come with you, but I couldn't.
I wanted you to forget everything and move on... I knew you'd be alright.
But you'll get lonely, and remember.

I know you'll grow strong, and read this letter some day.
I really wish we could have spent more time together. I'm sorry.
You were so young back then, too young to understand what they meant. So let me repeat...

    My final words to you.

    凛へ
    From : 父

I am taking it slow with the manga. It almost reads like a novel, the level of detail is amazing.

Raito meets Misa, pretty funny twist if you ask me.

I actually had to google that; I'm to used to remembering him as Light, and couldn't draw the connection.
