I have to share this. Kai Man Wong without "bloody producer" is more fun to watch...

I saw the announcements, kinda cool. It's got me wanting to break out some film cameras!

Huh, I haven't shot any slide film since Kodak killed off Kodachrome (never really liked Ektachrome). Still have a case of Tri-X and another of of Fuji Pro 400 sitting in the freezer, though. Guess I ought to slip some batteries in the old F5 or F2AS and see what I can get :)

The one I really, really miss is Panatomic-X. EI 32 so needed a lot of light and it was seriously fussy about exposure but what a smooth, wonderful picture you'd get.

Are any of you guys into the nice compact cameras? I've always enjoyed the quick, pocketable cameras and have gone through the Sony RX100 lineup both for personal and light professional use (design work). I currently own a RX100 m4 and am eyeing this Fuji X100F release.

There is so much choice right now. M43 or one inch sensor compacts, whatever does the job for you the options are there (sometimes with interchangeable lenses too!)...

Sony is even able to put crop/DX-sensors into the new compacts. Seriously try to not get confused with all the available options.

Pocketable - I have an Olympus XA and a Rollei 35SE - both of which offer excellent optics (an the rangefinder on the XA is well appreciate). No pocketable digitals though. I rarely am not carrying my Fuji X-Pro1 - don't have a need for anything smaller.

My all time favorite pocketable camera is the Ricoh GR. I don't use it as much recently, since I have a Fuji X-T1 with me most of the time. But it is my pocket as a backup when I'm out shooting with the Instax 500AF or medium format cameras.

@liamstrain I love the XA, that was the first camera I bought when I started to shoot film a couple of years ago and the only 35mm film camera I still have after selling all the Leicas and Voigtlanders I've picked up on the way.

+1 on the GR, its a fantastic camera and my number favorite camera of all time, regardless of format. Ergonomics are top tier, size is perfectly pocketable, handling is great and image quality is impeccable

I have a Sony RX100 Mk III as backup. Last year I was in China and my Olympus broke, so I was happy to have a backup. During daytime the picture quality is great, but in nighttime the lens stars appear a bit fuzzy. Here's an example:

Is there a particular reason to favor DSLR over mirrorless for high end photography?

Just trying to make this about the mirror mechanism itself. Like say Nikon for whatever reason produced a D5 in DSLR and mirrorless format.

Nope. As mirrorless catches up with AF speed and lens options the gap is pretty much closed and some would say in favor of mirrorless.

Yes, but mostly niche cases. For example, timelapse: all mirrorless cameras suck vs DSLR. Other is sport & birding. Mirrorless AF speed is on par with DSLR on single mode. Tracking AF, forget it. Moreover, OVF vs EVF. Especially in night photography. Good luck enjoying moon / stars on EVF.

Depending on your body and lens, there are some very competitive mirrorless camera systems.

Olympus is making good progress now.
