I was at Design Within Reach at Pasadena last week and tried out a few high end chairs including the Eames, Barcelona, Womb, Noomi, and Shell chair. I've been on the look out for the ideal listening chair ever since I planned on speakers. Keep in mind, my preference for chairs might be different from yours. I cannot sit on soft couches and chairs as it hurts my lower back. Figured you guys might find this info useful.

The Eames - very comfy but as I suspected, the neck rest is too high which makes it not the ideal listening chair for speakers. Keep in mind I'm 5'8" so it might be perfect for you tall fucks. This could be an ideal headphone chair though.

Barcelona chair - I had high expectations for this because of the upright sitting position. I like how the chair is designed to have give in the right places so it would fit many bodies. My gripe with this chair is the recessed lumbar area which doesn't work for my back.

Womb - Instant no. Doesn't fit my body at all and the high back makes it a horrible chair for speakers.

Noomi - The cheapest of the bunch and comfy. The shape works for speaker listening too. Not big on the rough fabric but there's probably options for it.

Shell - my favorite of the ones I've tried. Saw it the first time at the Volvo booth of the LA Auto show and had a nice sit before getting kicked out since it was the VIP room. The chair is very supportive for the back so you can sit for long hours in an upright position.

Freedom chair - Though not a lounge chair, I might still have a desktop setup next to the listening position and this could be dual purpose. Of all the office chairs I've tried, this has the best recline and headrest. Viable option.

I got the best deal ever. I found a Herman Miller Aeron, fully loaded, for $100 on craigslist a few months ago. I just had to replace the gas lift for $30, and its perfect. The seat is a little ripped, but works fine, and can be eveltually replaced for $100.

Did you get cloth or leather? I'm assuming cloth which would be like cleaning any car upholstery. I'll assuming you don't have a steam machine so you'll need soapy water, a soft brush, and microfiber towels.

Are you sure you want to know? Cheapest was the Noomi starting at $1300 with the Eames and Barcelona in the $5500 territory.

No leather for me, I'm in south East Asia.
I recall someone saying there's 2 cloth fabrics, and one breathes better?

I just bought two of these:

It's the most comfortable chair I have ever spent time in. My wife loves it as well hence buying two. It is the Ekornes Stressless Mayfair chair and ottoman with the Signature base in Paloma Oxford Blue and stained walnut.

A Most Excellent Choice. I used a similar Ekornes for over 20 years. Most comfortable chair ever. You will be sleeping in it more hours than you realize.

A little tip for keeping it that long. Place a piece of fabric (hand towel will be fine) on the top of back when sitting in it to keep head or hair oils from discoloring the leather over time. It will keep the inevitable disintegration of the leather at that contact point at bay for a lot longer.

    Congrats, I am envious!

Thank you and thank you for the tip!!! These chairs are going in my Library/Listening room (no TV!!!) and I can't wait to get them. I look forward to sitting in the chair and reading a good book while listening to my favorite music. I am sure I will take more than a few naps in the chair as well.

I've somehow ended up trying most of the chairs in @ohhgourami's post even though I am not into designer furniture at all. The Shell and Barcelona chairs I just didn't find comfortable for extended sitting as I found them just too hard. They really struck me as chairs that were designed to look good at the expense of comfort.

I recently tried an Eames lounger at a friend's place, and whilst it was beautiful, didn't find the headrest particularly comfortable. It's worth noting that the IP protection on the Eames lapsed decades ago and it's probably one of the most commonly (and legitimately) copied chairs available.

I'm using a simple Aeron (a prize from an Aeron Hockey event), as the mesh works so much better than fabric or leather with the climate out here.

Edited to reference the relevant post .

Great minds think alike! It looks like Mrsdegraded got a smaller size than you. I got the "Large" size and so did the wife. I am 6' 3" at 225 lbs and she is 5' 7" at 120 lbs. She said the large was just more cozy for her.

Actually they're both mediums. I can see your wife preferring a large though; I'm 5'8" c. 150 lb and I wouldn't like mine to be any smaller.

Mrsdegraded bought hers first, when I was out of town. She then 'persuaded' me to buy the other and give up my most excellent previous resting place, an antique pink velvet wing chair purchased 15 years ago from a second-had shop. Though very upright it was very comfortable, complete with head support. I'll see if I can find a photo.

Edit: the pink velvet grandma chair and green velvet chaise. @bixby , things like the pink one are great for us reasonably-sized people for comfy TV-watching and headphone-listening: the seat is not too deep nor too high, and the headrest is cushioned just right as long as your phones (or ears) don't jut too far back or more than about 1 ft either side. The green one, particularly with fluid to hand, needs no justification. Neither, sadly, is any longer in my possession...

I actually ended up getting an Eames LCW with a walnut finish and no cushion. I've sat on it for moderate periods and find it is quite comfortable despite being hard.

For those that like a chair with more cushion, the Flight Recliner is very comfortable. The backrest is quite special.

Nice Mayfairs! My beloved Ekornes Stressless wore out after 18 years, leather was cracking and part of the seat suspension broke causing sagging. Of course I just went to the leather gallery and took home a new Mayfair. Then my back started hurting and my butt was sore.

Either I have changed (more likely) or Stressless chairs are not as soft as they once were. Turns out there are good alternatives to Ekornes that may be more comfortable for some like me. After trying everything in the store I exchanged for a Palliser Baltic II power recliner. Here is a stock photo:

Leather quality is as good as Stressless at considerably lower cost. Very cushy and comfortable for me, I am happy. I find I sit on a Mayfair while I sink into the Baltic. Palliser makes some good home theatre seating if you are in the market. Whatever you buy take care of the leather. I use what Stressless used to sell and the shop recommended: Hide-Bracer Leather Conditioner Cleaner.

Help! I am just about done with my 40 year old rattan chair. Even when draped with a comfy Irish wool throw.

This was pressed into service for music listening a few years ago and is not very comfortable. Now that I have combined TV and stereo, I spend more time in it, hence the need for a new chair. Why don't I use the leather loveseat form the TV setup. Too big for the room and it is suffering age related issues as well.

Since my desk is in this same room, I have used my fantastic Steelcase Leap chair in conjunction with an old ottoman, but am not getting the comfort I desire. My days of buying top of the line stuff like Steelcase or Ekornes are long gone.

And the chairs and recliners at huge box furniture stores are mostly craptastic considering the price. So my thoughts were maybe a used Steelcase or the like guest / reception seating type, but those do not recline at all or maybe? a gaming style chair with bucket style seat.

Anyone using a sub $250 gaming chair for TV watching and music listening? Advice or recs?
