The FreshRoast SR500 only needs 6 minutes!

You can't be getting proper bean development in that time.

I started out on the earlier model FR. I agree 6minutes is fast. In those earlier days when I was using mostly hot air methods I was constantly trying to slow down my roasts by adding long extension cords and whatnot. Once I was able to control heat and create and use roast profiles the quality in the cup went way up.

For me, it depends on the roaster, the beans, and your goal, but nine to twelve minutes is typical.

Halp: my old-ass bodum burr grinder died unexpectedly (there was a ROCK in with my bag of beans, which will be taken up entirely separately with the roaster). The bodum kept up its end of the deal for the last 9 years. I have no problems getting another one but figured I would ask if there are any standouts in the field before hitting purchase. Any recommendations on motor driven grinders in the $75-$150 range?

The Baratza Encore, as @uncola mentioned, is about the only sane powered option at that price point.

    https://clivecoffee.com/product/baratza-encore-coffee-grinder/

I’ve heard plenty of stories of rocks breaking grinders, but have always been perplexed by them, as I’ve never experienced it myself. I’ve ground probably over a hundred rocks on accident through tabletop coffee grinders, but have never seen it break a grinder. I always noticed it as a non-coffee color grind in my coffee. However, my experience with this has always been on expensive Mazzer or Ditting grinders.

Now, because I’m bored and this is the internet, a little background about what roasters use to remove foreign product in the “rock’ category from your coffee…

With green coffee, foreign material in the realm of rocks are removed with screeners, optical sortation, magnets, and metal detectors. If you’re getting coffee from a roaster that is not a global brand, you may not see any of these cleaning aspects used. Large roasters will usually use screeners, metal detectors, and magnets for the majority of removing rocks. Even with these methods, you’ll get nonferrous rocks that are the same size and density of green coffee and they’ll pass through these foreign material removal steps. Most large roasters do not use optical sortation, but may outsource optical oration as a pre-cleaning step for troublesome coffee lots.

As mentioned earlier, many rocks get through green cleaning process due to density and sizing issues in regards to green coffee. Because of this, coffee goes through a post roast cleaning process called destoning. There are two types of destoning used: mechanical destoning and air column destoning. Air column destoners are probably used in >99% of coffee destoning systems out there. Your local roaster probably uses one of these if their roaster is at least 20kg. At it’s best, air column destoning is only about 70% effective, so rocks will still get through. To hit close to the 70% mark, the roaster must to use objective methods to operate the destoner, and must check it often. Most roasters simply use a subjective visual check to set a destoner and probably remove less than 50% of what the destoner can remove. Mechanical destoners can remove significantly more foreign material and are easier to run correctly, but you don’t see them too often.

And, as a final step to detect and remove foreign material: x-ray! Global brands will x-ray their finished package before sending it out to a customer. An x-ray machine will catch almost anything that’s not supposed to be in a bag of coffee, especially rocks.

TL;DR version: You're probably gonna find a rock in your coffee at some point.

FYI - Baratza sells refurb grinders through their site and their stock changes weekly.

Turkish friend just gave me a copper pot to make turkish coffee. He brought over with him 15 years ago, I'm pretty excited about it.

Drinking a little less coffee nowadays.

Five espressos a day is my limit. I still need my coffee though...

Yeah... that's the downside. I seem to get lucky, they seem to have a free shipping deal frequently enough that I never seem to pay to ship, but of course, you can't count on that!

I should probably shop around more. I rarely stray from Klatch, so I just need to find the best price for their products.

The typical places I buy from ship for $5 to $7. It's worth it if you order 6 to 7 lbs at a time. Put the sealed bags in the deep freeze. Take out a bag as needed, let it thaw, open and it will taste like it did the day you put it in.

Thanks for the quick input everyone! This was a sad, angry morning with no coffee until I got to work. Me-oh-my, the Baratza gear looks fabulous. Huge thanks to @DigMe re: the refurb products. I will probably (absolutely) end up buying the virtuoso if it comes onto the refurb page this week. The fact that Baratza services their own stuff and provides an exploded view with parts list (and sells parts) is very encouraging. I found the offending part, but Bodum is not so generous.

I bought my Vario through their refurbs. I had to wait a couple of weeks but one showed up. After the warranty was well-expired I started having an issue with the motor. I told them the problem and they had me send them some video of the issues and the sound it was making. Then they immediately shipped me a new motor on their dime with instructions on how to replace it. The old motor apparently had an issue with a plastic part wearing. The new one was updated with that part now metal. I love their service philosophy. They make it very easy to user-service so if you're comfortable with that the result is getting your gear back into working order much faster. They also offered for me to ship it to them and have them do the repair.

If you want to go to the dark side of manual grinding, the Lido 2 and Lido 3 really do stomp all over the Encore as far as grind quality for a relatively insignificant price difference. You're losing a lot in grind quality for the convenience of a motor.

"I don't want to think I've not lost a son, so much as gained a daughter."

I did the forearm grinder for years before finally getting a motor drive. I loved the satisfaction of a non-electric ritual with more uniform grind quality, but when balanced against "WE NEED THIS NOW-ER" I have not missed it once. Time is a significant factor when I am waking up.

I hear ya. I hated it when I used to use a Skerton back in the day. But, the Lido has a very aggressive burr set, so you can get through the beans a lot quicker than one would assume.

Update: Baratza Virtuoso arrived yesterday afternoon. It is very nice. It grinds the beans very well. I like it. Thanks again to all.

Did you end up finding a refurb on the site or did you buy new?
