@Marvey Is that the Freshroast? If so that's what I started on along with a Poppery 1 popcorn popper.

Haha, looks delicious. If you need help with double blind testing, single blind testing, not blind testing, or anything resembling coffee testing, let me know. I'll lend a hand.

    :drunk: :p

Hmmm, I've come to a predicament. I've finally realized that my Bunn G1 isn't going to be a practical use of the limited space in my dorm, and I am afraid it would be too loud to those around me. Now, I am wanting to purchase a LIDO 3, (I was thinking 2, but the 3 would be easier to take to and fro uni, but I'm still kind of torn) but am debating if I should sell my G1 on Craigslist for $200. I love my G1, and surely when I get a nice job will try and find one again and turn it into a Bunnzilla. I can store it at home for the next few years, but I would appreciate the $200 to fund the LIDO 3. Thoughts?

P.S. Sorry for rambling, just kind of what I do in the morning. (through the time until I go to sleep :p)

Man, if I was in Craigslist distance of you I'd want a G1 for that kind of price. Maybe you should switch schools to a school for the deaf? They wont care about your grinder, and it would drown out deaf people sex. That is not fun to listen to.

I bet @brencho could sell you one of his many cast away hand grinders for a decent deal...

Haha I'm down to 1 hand grinder which I use at work. Well that's not true I have a porlex but it's not very good. I guess I'll keep it for camping unless someone wants it haha

As to @pandather's dilemma, if you need the money or it would be helpful to buy a nice hand grinder just sell the bunn to buy whatever you want. I bet you could find another bunn used later or maybe your job will be so nice you can just buy a mahlkonig or whatever else cool shit exists in the future

Which hand grinder do you use at work? Yeah I was thinking the same thing about the mahlkonig too. I have a hard time thinking I'll be able to justify $400 burrs unless I have a job which would make a mahlkonig feasible lol. Hopefully my CS major pays off and I can get a mahlkonig, an Yggdrasil, and afford $7 cold-pressed juices on the daily. That's all I want. :D

Hahah that sounds like a good plan! As for my work grinder, I kept a Kinu M47. Super overbuilt LOL. I also really really like the Helor 101 and the Feldgrind both of which are very convenient for travel (the feldgrind moreso). Haven't tried Lido but everyone likes them too. I'm sure they're all pretty similar in function/performance and differ in form, feel, etc.

Yep. As a student studying abroad in the US, the feldgrind is basically perfect for me because of its performance for the size. Too bad there's no good black coffee in Vietnam where I'm at rn (all french roasted beans) so I'm still delaying my full impressions post.

Okay, the Helor 101 looks really appealing to me. Since it seems as if you've owned the lot you mentioned, did any of them take much longer than the others to grind? All I brew is drip with my V60, and the occasional Aeropress. I used to have a Hario Skerton which has to be the worst purchase of my life, it would take me 10 minutes to grind 20g of beans at a fast pace. :/ Watching videos on the LIDO shows it to only take ~20 seconds which is perfectly fine with me. As long as none of them take longer than a minute to grind 20g of beans at a relatively course grind, it should be fine. Thanks!

EDIT: Actually, if I could get $300 for teh G1, that Kinu M47 looks good too. @brencho How much did it cost you after shipping and exchange rates? (if you don't mind me asking)

@pandather yeah the helor, kinu and feldgrind are all similar at under 30 seconds. Haven't ever timed or noticed big differences. In a broad sense larger burrs and longer cranks make it easier and faster to grind, but the feldgrind was just as fast with a shorter crank and smaller burrs than the kinu so who knows :) probably not a difference that was "felt"

Actually one weird thing that affected how they felt was their circumference so like if you don't have huge hands don't get a grinder with a big circumference or it'll be awkward to grind

Okay, thanks for the info about girind times. I definitely understand the thing about it being awkward if you don't have big hands, coming from the Skerton. :p I think my hands are fairly large, so I don't think that should be an issue.

EDIT: Also, @brencho, I'm assuming that the Kinu M47 has been your favorite that you have owned? I love over-built stuff, so I'm starting to lean that way. :p (Portability really doesn't matter, I'll only be transporting it to/fro uni like twice a year.

yeah if you're not transporting it a lot, the Kinu M47 would be fine. it's definitely the largest of the bunch while still being like movable (unlike the HG-1 or the biggest Kinu that rest on a table top as you crank). Kinu has a smaller one too, M38 i think, referring to burr size. It's more Feldgrind-like, with a removable handle. the helor had a larger circumference so if you want a larger grip area that would do just fine versus the thinner Feldgrind. also consider your preferences regarding grind adjustment (on the top near the crank or on the bottom concealed by the cup that catches the grind). if you adjust often cause you change beans and stuff, adjustment on the top is much easier and doesn't require removing the bottom cup. etc etc.

Reviving this thread to just to say I want through a coffee phase for a while. I used to roast a lot, but got lazy and now buy my beans from redbird. Had a customized roaster with a thermocouple by the heating element and another in the beans to control and monitor the roast. Used a custom PID program to control the heater. Used to hang out at coffee geek and home barista forums.
I have a vario grinder, expobar hx espresso machine and many other coffee makers, but now spending my free time working on my audio gear instead of coffee stuff lol.

Hey, Randy! We have similar stories. I quit roasting too and now order from various roasters as well as buying local from one of a few great roasters in town. I previously had an Expobar hx and a Mazzer. I sold them both and bought a Vario, an Orphan Espresso Lido variation and a Behmor Brazen brewer. I use the Behmor in the morning and a Hario pourover in the afternoons. Now that we have several very good local coffee shops I get my espresso fix there. Each shop has its own style and variations so that’s fun. One has the classic La Marzocco machine, one uses a Modbar setup and one has a custom-made machine in a classic Italian style and they are also all coffee roasters as well. It’s a nice selection for a town of this size (on the smaller side compared to Dallas/Houston/Austin/San Antonio).

Coffee sucks. I switched off of it several years ago and drink my own green tea concoction every morning. I feel much better and have more energy. Ironically, I make coffee every morning for my wife.
