I am pretty sure some of you have already heard The algorithm. Not as Mathy or Proggy as the other shares here so far (loved CHON), but they are one of my favs:

If you guys are really craving this heavier stuff you might like CHON's first EP/Album CHON. Here's the leading track.

I start liking more and more this thread, like, I thought I was a bit alone listening this stuff, thank you.
For Panthera I do agree, a lot of bands owe them a lot.
@Rockin_Zombie nice to see them in here, very, very good band too. I guess we should now link the famous Animals As Leaders :

Textures diserve a place too :

@Ryu, happy to see that you have only good tastes :). By the way, write it "connaisseur" next time cause I think it comes from french.

Bands better than all these bands in terms of actually being progressive as in melodically progressing forward like classical music, not in terms of cramming more random atonal crap into a rock song like Rush.

    Mercyful Fate

    Demilich

Download the full album for free from the band's website or pay them for the remastered box set that sounds great.

Whitehouse as in "Wriggle Like A f'ing Eel"? Lol, that is one to scare the parents but is more like industrial/experimental music. They have been quite influential in the UK techno scene. Surgeon is a huge fan and sometimes plays Whitehouse tracks in his sets. Maybe check out some of Mick Harris' stuff as Scorn, or maybe also Coil or Cyclobe for less shouty and extreme but equally intense weirdness.

Fun fact, William Bennett from Whitehouse also has one of the world's largest and best Italo Disco collections and plays out a lot as his alter ego DJ Benetti.

Those are all great genre-defining bands and songs, but I think crazy/mathy/proggy actually falls under "random atonal crap". Some people like super unusual time signatures, some don't. I only like a selective few from this genre. Love Animals as Leaders, could never get into Meshuggah (particularly the vocals).

Different strokes. I can fully understand technical masturbation for the sake of itself isn't what most people would enjoy in music, but for me the part of enjoyment is having to unravel a song (if there is one) from underneath the layers of weird scales, time signatures and structures.

Also, I get bored easily if my senses aren't being constantly bombarded so there's that. :D
