In case anyone hasn't seen it, someone else besides Solderdude was able to audition the HD660S and jot down his thoughts: http://diyah.boards.net/post/28449/thread

For Sennheiser to not be sure of the impedance of the HD660S suggests that it is still in pre-production.

There we go. An unofficial, third party announcement of new Senns is literally minutes old, and already they''re a "ripoff". We need more of this high level of critical analysis here at SBAF!

I'm more curious about the HD700 for a bit less part. Why would anyone choose that headphone over the HD650 WILLINGLY? That post implied a bit more than just a subbass extension, but whatever. Opinions, assholes, ect ect.

He's registered on here. Doesn't mean he knows what he's talking about. Last seen posting the same question in three different threads here.

Oh, so we had the benefit of his superior knowledge first then? Excellent. ;)

Actually, I do remember because I’m admin there and saw the ‘cross forum quoting’ going on here which just isn’t cricket.

At this moment HD 650s are selling on Amazon for $315.00 USD, so if the HD 660Ss are truly improved (no one really knows) and if they actually retail at $500.00 (no one really knows), I call that a pretty good deal. But until we learn a lot more it's silly to make any sort of value judgement.

He did get an early morning laugh out of me, so credit where due.

He went quiet for quite a while on DIYAH but suddenly popped out of the woodwork. He’s not a ‘typical’ member though!! :p

Actually the Sennheiser hd6** prices have been all over the place inthe UK. The hd600 in particular. I bought my hd650 for somewhere around £200 and now they’re over the £300 mark.

It’s quite funny that the hd650 used to be the top end of the headphone market. Times are a changin’ I guess.

I’m sure the $500 is MSRP, which is the same price as the HD 650. HD 600 has an MSRP of $400. You can get both for far less money.

As @Marvey has said, never pay MSRP for audio gear.

I wrote that comment. I haven’t heard those headphones. Frans said it was a HD 650 with more sub bass. So that was the basis of that comment.

I find the HD 700 to have excellent mids and treble. And I would gladly pay more for the HD 700 over the HD 650.

I would however want a HD 650 that has more treble and slightly less bass. Basically a HD 600 with slightly more treble. :)

And the logic behind that comment was, if I can find a HD 650 for 250 quids in UK, then I certainly won’t pay an additional 250 quids for some additional sub bass while having the exact same headphone.

The genius of the HD 600/650 design is that the cable terminal and driver are a single unit that can be replaced without tools. If the connector goes bad, you just replace a single part under warranty, no soldering. A single connection would remove this benefit and/or require different parts for the left and right cups.

Techboy, I think you’ve misunderstood about the bass. Solderdude reported that it has more sub bass. If it does that without adding too much distortion then it’s a really welcome improvement.

One issue with the hd650 is that it rolls away quite quickly into the deep bass and this is the aspect that he was describing as improved.

I don’t think we’re quite being ‘ripped off’ as you put it. It’s not even been released yet, so maybe you were a bit premature and just surmising from one report?

But I had been waiting for a HD 650 with more treble. :(

HD600. If not bright enough remove foam.

Check out either mod threads here or solderdude's incredibly comprehensive mod guide on DIYAH.

It's really not hard to get a little extra treble out of them. The coin mod alone gives enough extra treble that I had to put the foam back in front since I'm very treble sensitive.

My mom always told me not to feed the trolls, but...

Just because you aren't getting what you've been waiting for doesn't mean you're being ripped off. Nobody is forcing you to buy it.
