It is very difficult for me to pick my favorite solos, however this is one I really enjoy.

It is from Dream Theater's 1992 Album "Images and Words" - Under a Glass Moon

    Solo Starts at 4:32

Well, as Maggot Brain has already been mentioned, I'll add some Guthrie Govan action (8m 54s)...

Adam Holzman's Moog solo starting at 6m 40s is also worth a listen and segues nicely into Guthrie's solo.

I love the presence of the banjo in this song. It almost mocks the sour tone of the lyrics while contrasting with everything else in the recording. Yet that banjo shines...

The second solo in this song at 3:13 just turns my head inside out, sounds like it being played backwards or something

    same with this classic 3:15

    and this one 2:53

I am surprised you have not mentioned King Crimson given your avatar has this cover. Then again, King Crimson would induce a solo overdose for at least ten threads...

@murphythecat , those are two of my favorite Coltrane solos as well. I'd throw in "My One and Only Love" and some of the stuff off of Africa Brass esp. 'Greensleeves'

awesome!! oh yes, the ive at birdland version is mindblowing. Live at birdland is imo his pinnacle in many ways!

1960-1961 is a very special moment in Coltrane career as well. in between his previous sheetofsound and his more intense stuff. Coltrane was just starting his new band, was on the momentum of his Miles years. I wish he'd have continued in the Ole/Africa direction. he did come back at the end of his life but it did not have that almost psychedelic/mysterious/almost sometime ambient genre.
Africa and Ole are imo very very unique in Coltrane Career in that you can really see he's trying to find a new sound. I have to admit that I wish hed have stayed with this style cause 1962 for me is dissapointing in many ways.
anyways, enough with my rambing I could go on and on talking about Coltrane :)

I didnt mention it cause I think its bit too intense for most here, but actually my favorite solo from coltrane is his solo in Ole. its so funny, so much imagery, I sometime start laughing cause it really sounds like OLE, its a rodeo!!!!!!

Im also a very big fan of Song of praise. this solo and Psalm are truly profound

How about this flute solo? Starting at 2:35, until about 7:40. Must be so tiring, especially with this aggressive flute playing.
Also great guitar playing by Terry Kath, and a great live recording, back when Chicago was good.

Non live version, a bit different, but still a great flute solo
From 2:35 to 6:10. Even more aggressive and pronounced flute playing

Also, while on Chicago, Terry Kath, live, 25 or 6 to 4, so great solo. Also in Balled For A Girl In Buchanan

I wish I could have seen that concert. But I was negative 29 years old, so...
