Oh, thank goodness they didn't use Cedar!

I hope the ultra high purity copper is pure enough!

But wait, what sort of leather is used, egads!?! It had better be rich, Corinthian leather as found in the 1975 Chrysler Cordoba. Anything less and the whole audio experience will be marred beyond recognition!

Herein follows an excerpt from: The Kunlun Monographs:

Agarwood (aka aloes wood, chen xiang) is used medicinally and as incense in a number of cultures. I didn't read the wikipedia, but I'm sure it explains that the wood gets attacked by a fungus and exudes an oil to protect itself-it takes decades to really saturate the heartwood. A really good fist-sized piece of agarwood can go for thousands of dollars. Look at your pinkie fingernail. A bottle of oil that size goes for $130. I think it smells a little like a rank old closet someone pooped in ages ago, but perhaps my nose has yet to reach its full refinement.

The Japanese, of course, went full-autism with this stuff. For example, there are at least five main grades. The highest grade is said to be for nobility, then there is a kind for common rabble--and then there is a grade that is classified as a common person who is wearing the clothes of an aristocrat... The Japanese traditionally burn the incense for funerals. There's a lot of research into the oil, but none that I've encountered relates to its audio properties.

Is this the first Grado with a balanced 4-pin option directly from the manufacturer?

That is some shockingly bad construction for $1400, an early preview of it's FR:

No, I remember reading that they always did balanced connections with all their headphones on request for ~$100$150. It was unadvertised though. This is the first time they were clear about it.

    Edit:

There is a Wired article that mentions this. Here is the relevant quote...

It's also sort of mentioned at Headroom. They say you can get a balanced upgrade but they get sent back to the Grados factory to do it.

I assume that you might also be able to get any of your headphones with a 1/4 inch jack instead of the 1/8 inch jack that is in the lower end models. It just might not be worth it compared to an adapter.

I hate Grado. Some of the most pretentious, detestable horseshit I've ever read. Doesn't matter if someone else said it, you still posted it. Comparing your shit-tastic bare minimum design work to that of Stradivarius? Get the f**k out. Now.

I once asked my local dealer (Headphonebar) why he stopped carrying all Grado higher than 325. Got the answer that in face of other higher end stuff, Grado were not selling at all - Grado is only good for cheap.

I've never understood the appeal of Grados... Every time I've put Grados on for a listen, it's like playing everything through a cheap FM radio or something. Maybe a fedora is required for maximum hipster effect.

SR-60 and -80 are ok sounding cans for the price, but they're completely open and suck as a portable for that reason. And comfort? Forget about it. Grado should do something new design-wise for a change, you can only get so far with 70's nostalgia.

I admit, I haven't had the SR-80's for a few years now or heard the 60's. But Porta Pros, i just tried them after a long while... They aren't great. Way too boomy bass and low bitrate-type highs and mids. Give me Aurvana Lives for a nice cheapo anyday before all of the mentioned.

Have you thought of breeding them for their leather?

Sounds like just what I need to wipe on my cables. Or maybe my LPs.

I have it on good authority that if you rub kyara-quality agarwood oil onto these headphones, the ghost of Joe Grado will come and tune them to not sound like garbage.
