@OJneg Do you know the thickness of the BB&B cork sheet? I can see some 1.5mm and 2mm thickness sheets floating around some shops but I don't know how thick is too thick. Would thicker absorb more treble energy/smooth it out a little more?

Yes, to my ears, the more material you add to the ring, the more correction. You see this best with felt. But from 2mm up you can expect coloration which my ears dont like. Give it a try, it is a matter of a taste. To anybody who tried this mod. How do you like it? Anyone tried to measure it?

Thing about too thick is you're going to have a diffraction issue. The one I'm doing is 1.5mm. I do not believe that a thicker material will necessarily give you more "correction".

As to how to cut, a fingernail would not cut out even and would kinda dig into the cork and make it crumble. I recommend using an exacto knife or a good pair of scissors.

BTW, you can see the measurement process in the link in the first post.

@ZeeRow I've been rocking 2mm a good few months with great satisfaction. The full set of mods (ring and trap damping, thick liner, SD resonator) are just fantastic together imo.

@chakku I don't think half a mm will matter a huge ton but at least OJ has the measurements so I'd go with his.

Zero has received his pair so I will start billing people on Paypal and sending envelopes on Monday. I might make a shitty YouTube video tonight explaining how to easily install the mod

Brief hiccup with lame Paypal fees, but I'm going to send you guys a different link via Email rather than requesting money within Paypal. Should work fine and with no fees.

Thank you @jacq and @badf00d for helping me out

hey @kirayamato like I said in the first post:

In short the cork mod does its part to tame the HD800's harshness caused by the enclosure. It is not a panacea (that will never exist TBH) and it is not the mod-to-end-all-mods.

I will say that listening to the HD800 tonight with only the Super Dupont Resonator and Cork (no Absorber) has been quite enjoyable from solid-state electronics.

There seems to be enough interest to do another batch. If your name isn't already on the list you'll be on the second round.

So sit tight on payment for now, or are the emails that went out last night the ones we should use to go ahead and pay? Thanks.

I agree, what I meant was like 3-4mm plus. Try a tape-cork-tape-cork sandwich. It makes over 4mm in height and the "correction" slowly turns into "weirdization" :). Try a wider one at 4mm and it does similar effect like the darker version of Anax 2.0 creatology part. Or we all just stay somewhere near your fine 1,5 mm and enjoy the music.

As for cutting, I sure did not suggest to cut with fingernails but scissors we use to cut finernails with . Exacto knife requires more skill than small fingernail scissors with round blades. Thick and straight scissors are not comfy for the job. Made a couple of various sets for my friends already, more materials and sizes for them to experiment with, so I wanted a quick and neat way to cut round shapes. My friends are all happy to find out how great HD-800 can sound once modded and tuned the ones earsĀ“ taste. That was the point.

OJ, many thanks for the inspiration and all the effort you put into this. All thumbs up!

Thanks for the work man, did my own cutouts today and with the shure resonator and rugliner from the 2.0, works a treat. Inserting the resonator was a huge step forward in tonality but at the price of bass slam/dynamics.

The cork mod works a treat with reducing that damping and reducing the bass bloat compared to Anax2.0(changstar edition). So some of that magical slam is back though not as much as before the resonator mod.

However to me and my treble happy Jpop and other stuff, the full cork mod might be too much so I recommend retaining the foam trapezoid and using the cork ring. Maybe a foam center and cork wings trapezoid to find that balance would be the next course for me. Thanks Ojneg!

Construction wise I used scissors to cut the outside dimensions and exacto to cut the inner dimensions. Tough as heck because my cork sheets has no adhesive backing with the inner dims. I can extend my help locally(Singapore) so if you want to give it a go, feel free to pm me.

@firev1 you might enjoy my version, I have Dynamat on the trapezoid and a piece of liner on top of it. The Dynamat improves the bass significantly in my experience, much more pronounced and tight. My liner layout is essentially shaped to be placed exactly on the mesh and it leaves the cork ring alone, then a small piece is cut separately and put on top of the Dynamat trapezoid. https://imgur.com/a/Da5mT < I have a cutout PDF for the liner if anyone is interested.
