@SKiring : the best result I measured was with the old tubes ;) not the white ones. but I can't be too much affirmative. We're talking about a 1db diff... Considering how HD800 measurements are affected by the Mic and headphone positionning....

I'll try Etys foam with and without the Old shure tube next.

    @frenchbat : I'm wating quietly the SBAF mod ;)

@sorrodje I expected as much it being small differences. I mean in the end what matters is the amount of fun you have with the can and that's what I'm having. :)

Looking forward to the Ety foam tips, I'm not too familiar with foam tips to comment on other tips much side the general few like the Shures, Westones, Tx00s and Etys.

@frenchbat and @cocolinho: https://shop.riteaid.com/con-tact-bath-mat-white-1-mat-0333690 is the one I'm using (also to be found on Amazon). After a suggestion by @OJneg who told me the bath mat @Bill-P used was the best he worked with. While the material that is used in the SBAF mod seems much better, sadly it's very hard to ship to Europe so I at least will be waiting until the mod ships. This is definitely the next best thing in my experience after about 7 different liners. It's both easier to put in (and stay where it is), much thicker and a breath of fresh air in terms of sonics. Maybe that can help out if you're on the look for a good liner and can't get the SBAF mod material.

@SKiring, yeah I would never take a razor blade near the driver. I meant actually removing the screen/shield by taking out the screws and pulling it off the driver ala Bill-P. That's the way I ended up putting the plugs in. Didn't feel comfortable pulling the screens off. Scissors would obviously work too. Don't know why I didn't try that.

I personaly feel more comfortable to pull off the screen instead of taking out the flimsy screws.. A friend of mine broke 2 of those screws

Do play with makeup wedge foam, it's open-cell and very dense, I've had great results damping high frequencies with it.
    They look like this.

Hmmm I was very tired when I finished this mod last night. Listening to them again they sound quite a bit better. I've ordered a pack of Shure olive large tips and I'm going to take another crack at cutting them doing a better job this time. Also curious to see the measurements from @sorrodje of the uncut tips.

Hi Guys, I'm new here but I just had to join best friends after reading all of the really interesting things you are doing with your HD800 's.To be honest I am blown away with your professionalism and what has been going on! I also have a pair and I am keen to experiment. I have a background in Physics and have access to a laser cutter and 3d printer but have had little to do with acoustics :)
It's hard to find some good information on Helmholtz absorbers but chapter 6 of this google book really goes into detail (book address appears below). In particular I read that that a helmholtz absorber needs a damping material just like a shock absorber needs oil to damp out oscillations. Anyway, my question is this...is the internal diameter of the centre cylinder in the 'black spiders web' just behind the dust cover of the HD800 the exact dimension as the one in the HD800S ?

    https://books.google.com.au/books?h...v=onepage&q=helmholtz absorber design&f=false

    Cheers

You see I am purely guessing (and I could be REALLY WRONG and also forgive me if I am preaching to the converted) that the centre cylinder of the standard HD800 is a Helmholtz resonator which combined with the headphone cavity gives the 6Khz peak and that adding 'oil to the shock absorber' i.e. some type of foam dampening material inside it will turn it into a Helmholtz absorber and allow us to reduce that peak as some of you guys have already demonstrated by adding acoustic foam of different densities.

@whipped : good quesrions. Thus far i hadn't the right tool to measure that. I'm waiting the caliper to do that. Cheers.

Tried today with melamine and with closed cell foam without any hole in the middle. Tips are still better. Currently i'm using ety foams without the inner tube but i tried this norning to put back a plastic tube in the ety foam and it seems the.l Mod measures better with tubed tips.

So the original mod described in the fist page is still the best ime. Ety or shure tips. Maybe t200 complys with a smaller inner diameter than t400 would be a good choice ?

Even if you could get a ruler out and measure it I think it would be good enough.

I just tried a very simple experiment. I placed a thin paper circular sticker over the central cylinder only on each can. Either the open pipe model has become a closed pipe (with lower fundamental frequency and missing even overtones) or the sticker has become an absorber for the open pipe , or a mixture of the two. In any case the 6Khz spike has really been reduced and using Audacity to generate test tones I now hear 5Khz louder than 6kHz. Interestingly I like the sound very much! I was hoping Sorrodje that if you have time in the future could you please take measurements of this simple mod. Or, please let me know the name of the equipment you are using to measure frequency responses and I will get my work to order it :) I have already glued two 3mm sheets of high density foam together as the material to use as my experimental helmholtz absorber to be placed in the middle of the ring and will use the laser cutter to make them next week to do some more experimentation.
    Cheers

No, it's not happening for me for some strange reason, gives me an 'unable to upload'. Still, its a simple paper sticker that only covers the circular ring as seen in my avatar.

@whipped so essentially blocking the top entirely.

I have open cell foam with an adhesive side I can try that.

Also imgur.com for uploading works fine! :)

@whipped maybe you could try drag-n-drop instead of the upload button? It might work with a downsized photo

Yup, I just cut a ring of open cell foam with an adhesive side covered by a ring of paper.

Mesurements and impressions later. I need to go right now.
