Should not kick off back pain though (looks not dissimilar to what I am doing, am currently training up for a via ferrata trip so anything short of roped ascent is on the table).

In my experience, upper back pain would be indicative of a pack issue. Lower back would suggest something lower down the chain causing overcompensation.

Take with massive grain of salt, this is what I've gotten from speaking to phsyio type friends or friends who've had long term problems diagnosed. I have no sports medicine background.

Anyway, from personal experience a good physio is worth his or her weight in gold.

I've had similar back aches from long hikes/walks, and strengthening my core has helped significantly.

Listen to what the people at Physio say, and what muscle groups need to be strengthened to help alleviate aches and pains, well worth the visit.

Today I read about a spider that lived to 43 (or something close). I think it was a Trapdoor Spider.

Apparently, it seldom moves more than a yard or two from its home and has a largely sedentary lifestyle. A spider can get to 43 that way: I'm trying for 86!

    :sail:

And how is it that cats can sleep all day and still be muscular and strong when they wake up for five minutes. This is really, really... not fair. And, just occasionally, I notice a certain reluctance in one knee. No pain, or anything, just, it doesn't want to work. So I seriously think I need to give up the spider regimen and do some exercise

You mean "give up the spider regimen and [dramatic pause] do some exercise", I hope!

That's an awful lot of potential knee problems!

    I'm 66 in a couple of months...

Nearly 40 years ago, I gave up adding salt, when a girlfriend told me, "you say it makes them taste better, I say it makes them taste of... salt," and I realised she was right. Of course, I still get plenty in stuff not cooked by me,

25 years ago, after a five-year illness and major surgery, spurred by fear, I gave up smoking. The problem turned out to be nothing to do with smoking, but I wasn't going to waste the giving-up effort. I gave up coffee, because I realised it just did weird stuff to me.

About 15 years ago, I gave up alcohol. I wasn't actually enjoying it much and couldn't see the point in going on paying for a headache.

Actually, not doing stuff is relatively easy, and the only one of the above that I miss is coffee. But getting off my backside and doing stuff: that's harder.

I've had lower back soreness forever. Going to physio has told me my hip flexors and IT bands are super tight. In fact they have been so tight for so long without much stretching that it has caused an increase in curvature in my spine. So slowly we're correcting that.

    Edit:

And instead of it being a sharing circle, I'll offer what I'm doing to correct it! I've played soccer most of my life and hiking too. Hiking in the Rockies around here is going up at minimum 400m to 1500m+ over a surprisingly short distance.

That night when I get home or right after showering after a game, I'll roll out. My quads are really bad, so essentially, finding the worst spot, stopping and bringingy leg to 90°. A lacrosse ball is great for hips. Physio I do IMS therapy.

All of the above I have a strong love/hate relationship with.

Another major problem many audiophile surfer it’s something near OCD. The repetitiveness of thinking, doubts and perfectionism can appear as audio nervosa, multiples headphones and muscle rigidity, specially in the back and jaw. Some muscle are automatically contracted and can only be relaxed with especific training.

Back pain soreness from physically pushing myself too hard: 1 to 3 out of 10.
Headaches I get from reading about people with audiophile nervosa: 7-9 out of 10.

Good health is one of those things that's just so easy to take for granted. Some things about your body are in your control, others not so much.

I truly empathize with people suffering from chronic pain. For the past 6-7 years I've been dealing with symptoms related to cervical disc/stenosis issues, and I've been fortunate enough to work with a great orthopedist who has guided me on what types of exercise and activities I should avoid. Fear of nerve-related pain has taught me to be much more conscience of my posture (especially when sitting and lying down) and more deliberate in my motions.

For a period of time I also suffered through some digestion-related issues, and that combined with high triglycerides led me to drastically change my diet. I completely gave up alcohol, which I initially thought would be the hardest part, but it didn't seem like such a big deal as time went by. I'm doing much better, and have accepted the dietary changes more or less as my new normal (no enriched wheat flour if/when possible, no processed meats, salad rather than bread/rice, etc.), and do enjoy a few drinks usually over the weekend. I still sneak in a few 'unhealthy' meal choices and snacks here and there, but as with everything of course they key is moderation.

Not sure anymore what my point was supposed to be...maybe along the lines of what @Thad E Ginathom was saying, for some of us it takes an attack on our health for us to introduce the positive change.

Thanks @David De Lucena for starting this thread.

I've been into alternative medicine for about a decade, but have done more reading about it than actually following the advice. Last year my wife was dealing with pre-menopause craziness but wanted to avoid the standard hormone therapy that can have some bad side effects. I found a local alternative health/ anti-aging doctor for her which isn't easy to find. But basically in about 2 months she was all normal again and encouraged me to go.

The Doc does most everything through supplementation after extensive blood tests have been done. Also, like most guys in their 50s, my testosterone was low and that made it hard to get my ass to the gym. So in addition to a lot of very high quality supplements I get testosterone pellets shot into my ass about twice a year. This is the all natural stuff that doesnt have the side effects and dangers of other stuff on the market.

So now I feel great and have a lot more energy. I also recently started a quasi-keto diet and have lost about 15 lbs in less than a month, which also makes it easier to get to the gym, ride a bike, etc.

Alternative medicine has a long way thru success and fidelity. It’s very hard to find a serious professional, most of them are curious “shamanic doctors” trying to do some thing to help people. I have found some serious professionals, nevertheless, that transcended conventional allopathy. What kind of testosterone are you using, if you don’t mind to share with us? I really a need some of this... lol

I've been trying hard over the last couple of years to cut down on sugars and fast carbs, in the process I've basically given up on all types of soda, candy and ice cream. It's hard in the beginning, then it's easier and in the end you don't really think about it at all. I still have the occasional chocolate or ice cream on a special occasion but much more seldom than before. Also trying to limit fast carbs like rice, pasta and white bread etc. Instead I stack up on the veggies and lean meats. Overall the health benefits have been really big, I have more energy, feel less bloated and I've lost probably 15 lbs. I tend to do a lot of sports anyway so I've never really been that fat, but cutting down on the sugar and fast carbs have made me feel a lot leaner and healthier.

I grew up in a family where there always was a lot of candy and ice cream involved so this shift in mentality hasn't been easy. Road trip? Have some candy. Movie? Have some ice cream. Family dinner? Have some cake etc. Do that for your entire childhood and you're essentially hardwired to want to consume sugar for the rest of your life. These days I've more and more come to subscribe to the idea that sugar is basically a poison and really, really bad for you. I still have "cheat days" but they tend to be more along the lines of a bottle of red wine, cheese and dried meats than anything to do with sugar.

Last month I also did a "100% clean living stint" which basically meant keto diet and no alcohol. Of course no smoking either but luckily I don't smoke so that part was easy for me. Highly recommend it to anyone, lots of small health problems tend to go away and you're basically giving your body time to heal from various small inflammations and infections.

One friends of mine master degree was to validate a craving scale. He just picked a cocain craving scale and changed every cocaine word with the sugar word. It was a huge success and the scale was validated in Spain. End of the history? High sugar diet has almost 50-60% of craving value when compared to cocaine craving... Nasty but real!

Just a couple of weeks I began experiencing agonizing pain on the lateral side of my left knee. It would come in a painful spasm. For a few minutes there would be no pain and then I could feel it build to agony and then it would abate again until the next spasm. It was impossible to sleep, it didn't matter what position I lay in.

After a bit of research during that night, I concluded that the cause of the pain was likely a tight IT band. I should really know this already, having recently completed a course in personal training. Luckily, I own a foam roller but had never used it. But decided to begin foam rolling at 2am that morning. And boy was it painful.

After the rolling, the spasming became more frequent but slightly less painful. So I was at least able to get some sleep that night. Now, I am rolling most days and no more pain. Who would of thought something as innocuous as a tight IT band could be so painful!? :)

From experience, low testosterone levels suck. I went to see an endocrinologist about it. Summary of his remarks were - taking any kind of steroid, whether testosterone replacement or anabolic, will interfere with the body's feedback system and it will respond by not producing testosterone at all since it detects that levels are above the trigger point. That trigger point may have been pretty low and you felt crappy because of it, but the consequence is that that hormone process shuts down. Once it has shut down for a long-enough period (months - years), it can become incapable of being restarted, so you are potentially signing up to needing to take testosterone supplementation for life. For some folks, that's an acceptable trade-off for immediately feeling better, I just want to be sure you are aware. There are plenty of PubMed articles about this.

Anti-aging doctors and clinics are one of the fastest-growing specialties in medicine, and very profitable. The anti-aging guys sometimes neglect to explain all this.

@mrflibble That knee pain sounds similar to what I used to have. The university running clinic diagnosed me with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS).

Self-weighted squats and lunges helped a lot. I just moved but I'll dig up the exercises they gave me as part of the study.

My partner is part of a GI research team and I'm really beginning to appreciate the influence gut health has on our bodies, both mental and physical.

There is an interesting supplement called tribullus terrestres. It boosts the LH and FSH hormones that act in the testicles producing more testosterone. They lack the negative feedback that occur when you are using exogenous pure testosterone. I know you can find good brand of tribulus in US, and there is some serious pharmaceutical industry that have tribulus for men needing to get their wives pregnant.

    @David De Lucena

That's quite interesting, I might pick up a couple of those pills and try them out. In sports testosterone and muscle growth is quite heavily linked but obviously I don't want to take any steroids.

The other thing is alcohol again.. alcohol lowers your testosterone and increases your estrogen. Hence less muscle mass and man boobs and all that. https://www.anabolicmen.com/alcohol-testosterone/

It's a shame that nearly everything we enjoy turns out to be bad for us
