Wow you guys are vicious...given my age and hearing (tops out at around 15kHz) I LOVE my Beyer DT990 Pro 250 with LD MKll for Rock and Metal. OTL tubes seem to roll off the worst of it's treble excesses (or maybe that's just me)...so basically it's a can for old gaffers whose hearing has been knackered by too many years of live concerts and other abuse.

I imagine it's difficult to enjoy the music on the DT990.

    Metal and Electronica I suppose.

Not a big fan of Beyers in general though, I haven't heard a single Beyers headphone I really like and I've heard basically all of them. For me Beyers are the "Bose of headphones", they're not completely shit but they're vastly overrated, sell like crazy and regular people think they're the dog's bollocks.

I honestly think Beyers R&D department have no f'ing idea what they're doing. A deaf lab monkey could come up with better audio designs in some cases.

That guitar part that starts about :12 and repeats at :16, :19, :23, :27 and so forth, is something I've had to listen around since the album first came out on the USA LP. I love the album (songs and sound} but that guitar part was always grating to me. And that first showed up on Acoustic Research AR2ax speakers played flat, about as forgiving transducers as I've heard. DT990 would be torture for me. You are much tougher that I, @Deep Funk !

Are you auditioning to replace Psalmanazar on SBAF?. That's a tall order. Most, but not all, of his posts made some sense to me. Yours doesn't

If I was the German engineer who designed those things I'd be so f'ing embarrassed I'd castrate myself and emigrate to Southeast Asia.

But if people like Beyers that's perfectly fine. "Whatever strikes your fancy" is my motto, "live and let live", "whatever floats your boat" etc. But as many people on sbaf I have strong opinions one way or the other and that's just how it is.

I like my T5P2's for portables, but then I like my Ether Flows also and I know that they aren't darlings on SBAF.

i think he's stating as clear as day his distaste for Beyerdynamic, which basically everyone else in the thread has also done. there's nothing unclear or hard to interpret here, so if you can't make sense of it, maybe just read it over a few times, peruse the rest of the thread, and then maybe ask him to elaborate rather than pick a fight with someone seemingly at random and for no good reason.

The second @TwoEars post is what should be in th first one, or something to that point. That's all. I am for strong opinions.

I own and enjoy the T70s, the secret was to get new pads on them. Thick leather in my case. Angled the drivers and pushed them back. They don't sound like they have a metallic sheen over the music anymore though they're still bright. It was a trade of air for pressence, brought the lows up enough to kill the unbalanced feeling. I also run a Sangaku. Not too tubey but it takes the edge off.

We're still clearly in the German partyhaus. Beyer/Ultrasone V shape. They do metal and electronics real good. Want to hear them at their best? Think what a middle aged German engineer would consider hip in the clubs. These headphones got me into Italo-Disco. They won't so classical any favors despite the marketing, maybe solo accoustic. Guitars. Banjos. Violin.

A good DT1350 has so much good sub-bass that it evens out the treble peak. Too bad that headphone had a few design flaws or I would have kept it.

Oh yes, the HD25 is pretty similar but it also balances a treble peak with a good dose of bass. Simple is it not?

P.S. Get a DT250-250, it sounds just as good as a HD600 but closed. Yes I recommend you do that.

I like treble, but I stick to the HD600 and Brainwavz HM5.

AKG knew how to properly do the treble right. Get a K500/501, swap the pads for the thicker K601 ear pads and enjoy.

That's actually useful with the HD-25 though- as they're the "sound guy" headphones. I can't remember the last time I saw a location audio guy without a pair of those to hand- they're light, compact, damn-near indestructible* and that FR renders flaws in the sound in a usefully stark way. Brilliant workhorses, even if the low end has a bit of a funny resonance.

Hell, I've seen expensive day rate guys in studios of famous radio stations who will use nothing else, as they're a known quantity. Also, being Sennheiser, spares are trivial to find and there's great unit-to-unit consistency, something that you normally can't say for Beyer.

    * They do have one flaw- those spade connectors into the capsules sometimes work loose and need a wiggle- but you can replace the spring in the cups to get a consistent contact if it pisses you off.

I agree these probably were designed to be enjoyed by those with some top end hearing loss.

However I have excellent hearing and I enjoy the DT990 600 ohm for Metal. I boufght my first pair open box and I noticed there were signs of them being taken apart so I decided to disassemble them to see the internals.

Long story short there was a tear in the baffle membrane so I decided to return them. I went maybe 4 days befor I purchased another pair BNiB.

Even though they are a bit on the bright side I loved how they gave life to badly mastered Metal music. I place a piece of felt inside the cups over the driver and that DOES tame the brightness down a bit. I plan on experimenting with different foam types to see what works the best.

Some people are just used to certain sound signatures and will never like the Beyer cans.

While I don’t think the DT 990 or DT 880 are perfect, they’re both worth having in my stable with the music I listen to.

This is a little off topic but Skylab, one of the most prolific and well-known HF members who at one point owned 20 headphones worth over $10k quit the hobby, went back to speakers and just kept DT880-600. Some people with a lot of on-ear experiences do like Beyers for some reason.

IIRC, he also loved the Leben amp that is super syrupy and warm. Might be he needed the harsh treble and scooped out mids to balance it out.

I think he eventually ditched that too and just uses a vintage stereo amplifier.

Only a Nazi would say something like that
