Nicely done. My 6 1/2 year old are working on the following and are down to the last bag (Bag 10). (A mere 1,359 bricks, not over 3,000 like Marv's mega-Destroyer.) Will post actual pics of our project later:

That's a lot more reasonable. I think I finally ordered my final set of pieces - from the 11th bricks vendor. Costs are close to $400 now. I double checked my parts list, but realized that I glossed over something I circled as not present when I did the parts count.

I love this. Mini-me has way too many legos. But the super star destroyer is awesome!

Oh crap, that is sweet. I didn't think of taking that approach. I've considered doing this for other projects and I've always wanted that Lego Executor model. But yeah, $1k is a bit steep. How hard was it to source all of the parts? I assume you are going off of this list: http://lego.brickinstructions.com/en/lego_instructions/brickdata/10221-1

It wasn't hard to locate all the parts at all. You can download the parts list and upload them to sites like Brinklink or BrickOwl. I used BrickOwl for this one because you need a lot of certain kinds of parts, and BrickOwl vendors tend to be larger with bigger stock of parts. You will need A LOT of wing and rectangle plates pieces like this:

    [IMG] [IMG]

Generally, the idea is to limit the number of vendors you have to buy from. This is what I learned:
    1. Plan on getting the mini-figures separately because some of them are super rare. Eliminating mini-figures also decreases the number of lots (different kinds of pieces) significantly.
    2. For the engine pieces (3 x 6 cylinder), I used dark stone grey instead of medium stone grey. The medium stone grey are rare.
    3. For the colored pieces (red, white, blue, green, yellow), feel free to substitute colors, especially if they are cheaper. These are internal pieces used for alignment, so substitute colors on a consistent basis.
    4. Study the manual several times through before you build. Although the super star destroyer is over 3000 pieces and several feet long, it's not a daunting as it seems if you are organized. Make sure you have a big table.
    5. Organize the pieces before you start. The Lego set has the parts in a dozen bags for staged building. You won't have that luxury here. It will be a bit harder to locate the odd pieces, especially in the first half of the build.
    6. Keep the parts list handy.
    7. Shop around the vendors for the best parts prices keeping in mind that every extra vendor you go to will cost you can extra $3 or so in shipping. I screwed up my inventory list so I ended up going to twelve different vendors.
If you plan on building this, I might have spare parts. I generally overbuy pieces by two or three. I may have accidentally overbought a good number of wing pieces, but I am not sure yet.

    Thanks for the info!

Did you get all new parts, used, or a mix? I tried looking up pricing and the lowest I found from one ‘source’ (forgot if it was Brinklink, BrickOwl, or elsewhere) was over $650, including shipping, figures, and maybe stickers. There were also way more than 12 vendors. Maybe I’m doing it wrong?

Did you end up getting the figures and parts for the stand? If I did do this, I probably wouldn’t (depending on the actual price) since it won’t have much collector value anyway.

That’s good to know about the colored pieces. I sort of guessed that from going through the manual (200+ pages!!!) and watching a few videos. Thanks again for the help… not sure if I should thank you for bring this up in the first place though. ;-)

Get rid of mini-figures to lower the price significantly. Some of them could be super expensive. I'll probably make my own stickers. Substituting certain parts may lower cost a lot. For example the dark stone grey cylinders for the engines may be much cheaper than the medium stone grey color. I used both new and used parts.

I got the parts for the stand. They were fairly cheap and I also have a lot of leftover technics pieces. You can probably make your own stand with cheaper parts. I may have raised the price on wing pieces since I cleared three stores out of those parts three weeks ago. Just wait another month or two.

Skipped a few steps to build the external hull. Messed up on an order and didn't receive about 24 2x12 medium stone grey pieces. Had to make do with what I had on hand from my spare parts bin. You can see the substitutions.

It's a new Force power: Force gigantism. Expect it to be featured in the next Star Wars. Rey, Kylo, Finn, and Jake will grow to gigantic proportions and battle each other among super star destroyers and planet killer space stations.

Hmmm, that actually sounds like it would be a good movie.
