Yeah, the Russian 4P1L DHT in triode mode. Exactly. It's going to yield preamp with more gain and is commonly designed with the Lundahl LL1671 interstage/line-out. Anyhow, it looked interesting and is popular, but what I can glean from youtube videos - huge grain of salt - I still think the tone of the 26 is the sweet spot so to speak for what I'm trying to achieve. And, yeah, I don't need/want the extra gain.

@peef initially suggested those to me but apparently getting well matched tubes for those is a screaming nightmare.

Not to mention that a globe 26 will beat the 4L1P on looks any day of the week. :)
Not quite as cool as the 205D, though. That's another very linear tube.

Yeah, maybe 5:1 and still have some gain... I'm really building this on a subjective basis with a particular sound that I have in my head, and that's pretty hard to do without a sandbox in which to experiment and a fair amount of money to throw at wasted experiments. I want the tone and resolution of the 26 to have a fair influence on the final sound. The 01a/26 pre will be used with a KT90 amp which has its own volume control. So I'm not sure if I should give the preamp more gain to give more flexibility in playing with gain structure between preamp and amp. At least, so far, that's why I'm leaning towards a lower turns ratio than what I see with the off-the-shelf Lundahl line stages. Feel free to opine.

Coincident uses the 101D in a line stage pre designed by Isaac Blume, which receives very high praise. A similarly cool looking tube. I'd like to hear it, but they're pretty hard to find around.
