Elaborating on the idea, maybe even the reviewer has to express his own preferences in the terms of weights BEFORE performing an evaluation session, this is, of course, assuming the information presented for people to express their preferences does a good job at capturing this sort of thing. In this way the relative nature of the whole endeavor is taken into account from start to finish?

Yes, a paragraph or two would be helpful. Some of the items are closely related to each other. Some correlate to measurements.

I expect to see Head-Fi measurements at some point pretty soon. Jude's got the gear, it's only a matter of time.

I don't expect to see a remarkably creative and novel offering, he's pretty conservative. Probably a good set of measurements, though, he's got some nice gear.

One more thought on this since Tyll mentioned it. Making the areas apparent isn't quite the same thing as totaling the scores. Yes, there is an aspect of it that is close to evil summing (maybe too close?). But actually seeing the areas clearly lets you observe some things about the scores that you can't with simple sums.

For example, the three areas below all sum to the same total: 42. But the shapes tell a very different story about each of these hypothetical cans:

    • A is totally middle-of-the-road in all aspects. Nothing standing out as bad and nothing standing out as great.
    • B is clearly lopsided: excellent in some aspects but terrible at others
    • C is something in between the two
Maybe in the end, the spider multiples are too close to score-totaling to be worth pursuing. I will leave that to you all to weigh in on.

Regardless of where we end up, thanks for the engaged discussion and the opportunity to have the debate.
