I hear terms like, “They will scale well from a mid-tier system on up.”

What do you consider to be representative of mid-tier?

Where does the upper tier begin?

Where does the lower tier end?

I hope the tiers aren’t soley based on cost.

I am not sure why it is necessary to classify gear into arbitrary non-descriptive categories. It is much better to just describe the qualities of the sound.

If you absolutely must use those terms, I think the easiest way to describe it is in terms of the compromises in sound you make. Lo-fi gear is good at a couple things, mid-fi gear is good at several things, and hi-end is good at most things. The things that each are good at will vary.
