Get Out was probably my favorite of 2017. Lady Bird is up there as well.

Speaking of Marvel movies, Infinity War is surprisingly good. Fun romp. Thanos is such a badass with a little bit of heart.

Just watched "Captain America Civil War" to prepare for "The Avengers Infinity War." Civil War is pretty good. It is amazing how Marvel writers tie in so many stories and their characters while keeping the main plot of the film coherent.

Either way I had to see this film first.

P.S. When Iron Man gets angry Bucky and Captain America nearly get killed. That was an interesting turning point.

So I saw infinity war. There was a group of middle schoolers sitting in front of me. They were sobbing. I was not.

Infinity Wars was great. Most impressive for me was how the staggering quantity of characters had their screen-time balanced as part of a film that wasn't too herky jerky or contrived.

A Quiet Place was excellent. The premise of the movie is original and fairly simple, but the technicalities are excellent - sound, lighting and all. Also some terrific acting between the lead actor and actress.

Anyone else find it interesting how Marvel turned their D-list superheroes into their most popular movie franchise after mismanaging their A, B, and C lists?

I'm not a huge Marvel / DC follower but who are the A, B, and D listers in this case?

I think it was Fox and Sony that mismanaged X-Men, FF, and Spiderman. It's Disney that's behind the Avenger's success as much as anything and the aquisition to the rights for X-Men and FF is very cool for future additions to the Marvel Movie Universe.

Also, I don't know that the Avengers would really be D-List. (?)

Isn't Spiderman a part of the Avengers though? And were the X-Men and Fantastic Four really more popular than Ironman/Thor/Captain America before the cinematic universe began?

That being said, even within the Avengers, I feel that the best characters (in my book anyway) are also the less heralded ones. Peter Quill / Starlord had the best moments in Infinity Wars IMO, and Black Panther is just all-round the coolest.

    I'd rank Marvel's A through C as Spiderman, X-Men, and Fantastic Four

There are various layers of responsibility. Sony and Fox made plenty of poor decisions regarding those franchises, but it was Marvel that licensed them to others in the first place.

As a whole they weren't as popular as the 3 listed above so that would more or less put them in 4th place. I could never get into actual comics, but as for adaptations into other media, the Avengers were usually just cameos on someone else's Saturday morning cartoons when I was little. That's probably a little unfair to Cap and Hulk though. They also had their own shows and movies.

Well he is now in the MCU. And probably in some random comic continuity too, but originally he was not. Mostly he's just there so Disney/Marvel can add another popular character.

Also making Peter Parker ride on Tony Stark's coattails and wear a reskined Ironman suit is lame. Lamer than Sony making his webshooters part of his biological mutations.

They were way more popular than any of the Avengers besides Cap and Hulk. That's why others swooped in to buy the movie rights for those first.

I never got into the Avengers as much as I did the X-men comics. The Avengers were pulled together from already established individual comic book series. The XMen were a collection of characters from the start. I think that's why the X-men are the bigger and more popular comic franchise.

I also think (in the comics) that they roped in Spiderman to boost Avengers sales. The members of the Avengers were never individually as popular as Xmen. Captain America and the Hulk were probably the two biggest individual sellers, as Thor and the rest were never even close to being as popular, in my eyes.

I would put Black Panther and Thor Ragnarok into the Good category. BP being over hyped is a fair assessment, I'd say.

Ooh I really liked Black Panther. Thought that it had by far the most character, flavor and depth out of all the MCU movies.

Well, either way, the difference is that Marvel Studios under Disney has made the Avengers their most profitable franchise. Marvel Studios wasn't involved with FF, Spiderman and X-Men. I'd imagine that it'll be years before we start seeing the Fantastic Four and X-Men join the Marvel Cinematic Universe but unless Disney does to the MCU what it did to Star Wars, I'd expect much better films from those new titles than we've usually* gotten in the past.

*The first two Tobey Maguire Spiderman movies hold up to the new MCU films, IMO.

Logan pretty much has every other superhero movie beat imo, even infinity war. Marvel's formula and infrastructure is unbeatable, to the point where I'm certain no other studio will be able to do assembled heroes as well. But Logan actually went above and beyond a superhero movie, albeit failing at developing a good villain like most other hero movies. I'm more of a solo hero kinda guy, so Logan gets my pick for best comicbook hero flick to date, excluding the dark knight trilogy since those are more neo-noir than hero flicks.

Thor was huge back in the Walt / Louise Simonson era. That's when the best stories were told with great artwork.

Haven't see Infinity War yet (actually have been binge watching older MCU films to catch up with intent to see Infinity War this coming weekend with my son), so no spoiler please (have avoided most of this thread). But as an old-time Spiderman devotee as a child, I hated the treatment of the webslinger in Homecoming notwithstanding lots of other good elements and solid and fun performance form Tom Holland. The idea of Spiderman as second or tenth fiddle to Iron Man/Stark is offensive and Spiderman is not about a super-suit (although his costume design has always been the best IMHO). It is about swinging from webs and not flying/doing other Iron Man-ish crap.
