I agree with you about that first two Spider-Man movies, but on the Star Wars tip, I think it is purely Kathleen Kennedy's management that has hurt the franchise. She's the president of that particular Studio. And there's enough blame to go around for Ryan Johnson who wrote the most abysmal Star Wars screenplay. Story and continuity be damned!

This! Spiderman has on a few occasions taken on the X Men and made them look like amateurs (until Professor X stepped in), and he never played sidekick that I recall. The lost teen thing is way over done in the MCU.

Well, it's a full scale blaxploitation flick and my guess is that this contributed to the effect too. But yeah, quality wise it's good at most, just as TR.

(love this discussion) ... my 2 cents on several topics:

1 - UNDER THE SKIN (2013): I tell people about this film, but never met anyone who saw it. One of the most disturbing & memorable films ever. Suffice to say Scarlett Johansson gets totally naked in a pivotal scene--but I was so freaked out by the scene & her character that I didn't pay close attention. The soundtrack is a true mindfuck (as is the entire film)....the ending still stings in memory.

2 - ARRIVAL: Thought I knew the genus/species of this one going in--man, was I wrong. What a beautiful surprise this plot became: memory & time (classic film themes).

3 - Michael Shannon: One of the best character actors around; and the camera can't get enough of that face. Started paying attention to him after seeing THE MISSING PERSON (2009) & BUG (2006).

4 - THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES: Others here mentioned this one. It won the Oscars in '10 for Best Foreign Film, no surprise. Hard to forget this one. Soon after I went on a rampage, renting Argentinean films & anything w/Ricardo Darin in it.

Today I watched the film "Avengers Infinity Wars." Before watching it I watched some other Avengers films and quickly updated myself with the comic book spoilers. I was at the cinema, Imax 3D, middle front row on a middle seat.

This film is awesome. The way the story ties in all the stories of the characters works. For a long film it is well paced, well written and the acting is superb. The jokes work, the dramatic shifts work and then there is Thanos. Thanos is so well developed as a villain you almost like him. (He reminds me of Char/Shar in the old Gundam Series, epic character!)

I cannot say more than this. Catch up (a little on the MCU), watch this film in optimal conditions (Imax 3D is awesome!) and enjoy the ride.

For a Marvel/Disney film this is "Apocalypse Now" good. They really raised the bar for the superhero movies with this one.

Highly recommended (& worth the homework!)!

I'm reading 'Space Odyssey: 'Stanley Kubrick, Arthur C. Clarke, And The Making Of A Masterpiece' by Michael Benson.

Highly detailed, highly engrossing, highly recommended, if you're a Kubrick fan or just enjoy reading about How Films Are Made, or the movie industry as a whole. This is one of my favorite movies by one of my favorite directors, so I'm lapping this stuff up. I recommend having the movie cued up so you can look at the scene as it's discussed, and keeping a computer handy (or taking notes) to delve deeper into the people involved.

I just wanted to chime in on "Under the Skin", since you said you haven't met any others that have seen it. I liked it a lot too, and your brief description of it is spot on. For those that haven't seen it, to my sensibilities it is a bit of an art film. It's not a popcorn movie, so to speak, but certainly engrossing.

Has anyone seen "A Quiet Place"? This drama/horror/sci-fi flick got an impressive 8.0 score (based on 100k+ votes) on IMDB. Anyone knows anything?

It is a very good film. It's not a conventional horror film, and won't make you gasp at how complex the plot-lines are, but it does a great job at maintaining tension and the assault on your senses. The acting is also great. You care about the characters and empathize with them.

Word of advice though, if you're intending to catch this in the theaters:

    1. Avoid one which is frequently rowdy / overly crowded
    2. Try not to bring in chips / popcorn / anything that makes noise continually

SJW crap is great because it clearly shows how much we have progressed as humanity. It equally annoys white, brown, yellow, gay, male, straight, female, pink, trans, etc. etc. people - we all hate bad storytelling and bad characters and focusing on stuff that's not important to the plot. Lando is pansexual! IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT! .. no, it's not!? :D
And SJW's will never ever be happy because it's their thing to throw turds around regardless of the reason.

I'm impressed the MCU resisted for so long, but I'm really worried about Captain Marvel movie and character. It smells of sjw. I hope it's not after all.

Regarding Star Wars, it's possibly forever ruined for me going forward. What remains is a very fond memory of the originals (and to some extent the prequels and prequelmemes). I hope they make an old republic era trilogy, possibly focusing on Revan and/or Valkorion-Vitiate type characters, one NOT directed by ryan johnson (intentional lowercase)...

Highly recommended seeing the German film Victoria (2015). Incredibly shot in one take and has a great soundtrack done by Nils Frahmn

Just watched "The Wrestler (2008)" again. What a great movie. Mickey's best performance imo.

Fabulous, that's what I hoped it would be. Thanks!

I always go to cinema early in the morning and NEVER bring any food/drink with me.

Ended up seeing Solo... really didn't like it. Wanted to but no, this was bad. The movie was not only boring but did more harm than good. Is it really that hard to write a decent Star Wars script with a $250M Budget?

They Screwed Up the Kessel Run, They Screwed Up Han Solo's Name, They Screwed Up the card game that won Han the Falcon, They Screwed Up Lando, The movie was dark and not in tone, it was actually dark and hard to see... Chewie was cool and I liked the first 10 minutes and the train heist ... beyond that though this was garbage and I'm done with Star Wars until the whole damn thing is rebooted by some people who 'get' Star Wars.

Yeah I saw it in 3D it was so dark. I liked the physicality and worn in feel of the movie, in that sense it felt like a new hope. I would say it's a total pass to see it in theatres. I'll buy the 4k bluray of it when it comes out probably though.

I expected a 1/10 steaming pile of shit from Solo tbh. So I was nicely surprised. I's more like, 3-4/10

In my eyes, Star Wars is something like

5 and 6 > 3 and 4 > 1 and rogue one > 2 and solo > the copy paste mary sue that is force awakens > last jedi unspeakable horror

Deadpool 2 is worth the wait. When you get the jokes and cues for the soundtrack everything falls into place. When part 2 of a film is this good you are grateful. Oh yes people were laughing.

If you liked the first film, watch this one too. Ryan Gosling's writing and comedic timing are great.

    Recommended.

I feel like cinema has just reached in the last few years where music was 20 years ago. Theres great stuff out there if you dig but most studios are just releasing rubbish, safe movies in order to keep up with our demand for more and more content. We are the Netflix generation.

The democratisation of film making via the relentless march of technology has led to super affordable cameras and computers, with faster internet speeds pretty much anyone can create and distribute video content these days. There is so much rubbish out there and people want it.

On the bright side, this gives opportunity to brilliant people who 20 years ago would never have had the opportunity to get into the field. There are more great films that ever before, you just have to look for them.

Recent big budget films I've seen include Star Wars, Black Panther and Solo. They are all awful, I lasted 5 minutes into BP. I think people are just used to watching shit because they're dulled their minds with 3-5 hours of Netflix a night.

Alaarx I slighty agree with your sentiment but have to say black panther is actually a bad example. If you can sit through the first half of the same old superhero cliche you get a film which explores the black rights movement.

There is alot of rubbish out there and there always has been but there easily forgotten and only the great films get rembered.

One great thing about Netflix sites and streaming services is that it hopefully it reduces the financial cost to people accessing films. Also it's nice to see the film business get shook up, they have generally been over paid for years just look at Hollywood accounting, it's not a business model which should be celebrated! Sadly looks like Netflix are trying to copy this in the u.k
