Looks like Dan's been at it again, releasing a new planar magenetic HP for ~$800.

    http://mrspeakers.com/aeon/

Also on HF Dan said there's a discount on the early units: "preorders for the first 250 units will be only $699.99"

Will take a listen in NYC this weekend.

    Some details from the site:

    Efficiency: 97dB/mW

    Weight (without cable): 340g

    Cable: Dual entry

    MrSpeakers' AEON headphone includes:
    • All new planar magenetic driver with V-Planar and Trueflow technologies
    • NiTinol "memory metal" headband with hing-free design
    • Dyed-through leather headband
    • New DUMMER 1/4" and 3.5mm dual-tip fabric covered headphone cable

I'm just glad the upwards creep of pricing in the planar space is being interrupted, at least momentarily.

It's almost as if they cut the ether flow earcup in half and put one on each side. Might be able to listen to them in April though.

Nitinol is cool and all (started my MSc on them before switching topics)... but the usage of shape memory alloys really doesn't do anything here that a cheaper steel band couldn't do just as well.

It isn't that bad looking, if it turned out good, I may consider getting one for the office.

My thoughts exactly. I'm just glad Dan delivered what he promised, a lowered tier priced set of cans to succeed his Mad Dogs. Even though I'm done spending on headphones, I'm curious how these will sound.

Product photo wise, why does it look like it was taken in a dark studio without lights and with a handphone?

Looks like a HiFiMan HEK had a baby with a Ether C Flow.

I've been listening to this one for a few weeks now. It's impressive for this price level. Closed back done right. I prefer the tuning over the Ether closed.

Does this one have some lower midrange intact?

Vocals are great. It's a warmer overall tone.

@Ice-man Could you be a bit more specific on how they compare? I mean, you know I'm not the biggest fan of anything from the Ether line, and usually for different reasons for each headphone, but I've always got a clean slate for each new product. (In other words, if you could compare against all the Ether stuff...)

Interested in reviews. It seems like there's a current gap in good closed headphones.

yeah, I like it too. I hear a smoother friendlier presentation. Easier on the ears even with rock music. Bass sounds slightly elevated and punches hard with EDM or bassier music.

Woah. That is one of the most un-planar looking 300hz square wave I've ever seen. Very curious to see waterfall (and burst response?) on this.

Yeah, it's a good set of measurements. Actually the biggest surprise to me was how much isolation they have.
